Tokyo--Best area to stay in for a first time visitor?
Going to Japan for 11 days at the end of October. What would you recommend as a good area of Tokyo for a first time visitor who wants to be centrally located? Thanks!

Hello! What is your accommodation budget? Having said that, my personal thoughts are somewhere near a major station on the Yamanote line. They're convenient jumping stations to get to most places, whether it's via the JR lines or the subway. But they're also quite busy as well, so as a first time visitor you may not want to dive into the river of humanity that is Tokyo commuters just as you arrive!

I stayed in the Yanaka district of Tokyo on my first visit in 2004. It is a non-tourist residential area yet convenient as far as I was concerned - ten minutes to the JRYamanote - Nippori station and 5 minutes to a Metro station. Two stops from Ueno Station where the Park and many museums are and less than 20 minutes to Tokyo Station. I know others prefer more of 'downtown' Tokyo so it really depends more on your interests and itinerary.....

I enjoyed staying at the Cerulean Tower, near the Shibuya station, last July. Gave me good access to JR lines and the subway. My trip report giving details on the hotel is here in the forum if you search on my name.

My first recommendation would be not to spend all of your 11 days in Tokyo. Take the shinkansen to somewhere else for a few days and experience Japan!
Tokyo is a huge city spread out over a large area. If by centrally located you mean near the center of the city then you would want to stay in or near the Maronuchi district.
If by centrally located you mean near public transport then anywhere along or within the Maronuchi subway line is fine. I prefer to stay in Shinjuku, but wouldn't mind Shibuya, Asakusa, Ebisu,Shinagawa or the Roppongi areas. See here for more information on Tokyo neighborhoods and the metro:
