To Go or Not To Go......

Hi - I was meant to be flying in on the 30th of April for two weeks in Bangkok - but ended up cancelling. I have rebooked to fly in this coming Sunday , the 30th - again for two weeks - but am unclear as to whether to come - or defer again. I cant really look at anywhere else in Thailand and/or Asia as the purpose of the trip is largely some dental work . [and yes putting off the trip would again put off the Dentist!]
Apart from the dental work the balance of teh time would just be looking around, restaurants etc.
The Australian governement also still has a Do Not travel warning....

Views? - and thanks
David

I'm in an exactly similar position, David - minus the dental work. Here's my thinking - on matters of personal safety, I don't really think there's an issue now. A visit now supports the Thai people just when they need it, I suspect. If you can, rebook your hotel - the deals are amazing right now... I wonder why?

As for the vibe? well, that's another thing. Dunno.

Look in here for the recent posts on BKK. This beautifully sums up the streets yesterday. That's about as contemporary as you can get. Go look.

Thanks Dogster - I read Hanumans post this morning and yes does provide a view [and a refreshing one at that] - and have been following the other posts all week - as this is giving me more insight than anything else i can get hold of.

Havent booked the hotels yet - I cancelled the last ones so thought I would wait until I had decided - and yes all good value.

Cheers

I agree. GO!!

I'd go, but you have to decide what is comfortable for you.

I expect hotels will have lots of specials. Check www.latestays.com (the dogster's fave) as well as www, sawasdee.dom and www.agoda.com

Not advocating one way or the other - but one thing you might want/need to consider is the implications for your travel insurance (should you have it). We were traveling to Bangkok in January 2007 (right after the New Year's Eve bombing) and the Canadian government issued a travel warning for travel to Bangkok. That effectively nullified all our previously purchased travel insurance (cancellation, medical evacuation, etc).

We did go and it has caused me to scrupulously read the mice type of insurance policies to ensure they can't change the terms after purchase.

Thanks all - and Elizabeth good advice. I havent bought the travel insurance as yet as I tend to but it just before travel but I will now read more carefully -

David,

Just want to add that there's a lot of chatter about animosity towards a few retarded foreigners in Thailand. While you are here I would suggest that you don't express any political views about what happen. Talking about it is fine but don't take side.

Thanks Hanuman - good advice and I would have no intention of taking sides, but do at least feel more fully informed by virtue of your posts. David
