I will be in Sri Lanka for 3 weeks (11/24-12/16/99) and I'm still looking for tips on nice AND cheap accomodations as well for places I shouldn't miss. <BR>How bad are the mosquitos in this time, are there usually mosquito-nets availabale or is it useful to carry an own net? <BR>Thanks a lot for any helpful tips

hi there <BR>i have been to sri lanka and the mosquitoes or mossies as we call them here, can be bad there. i would suggest a tropical strength personal bug spray and perhaps even light long sleeved clothing and trousers....the strongest recommendation i can make is for you to take anti-malarial medication before you get there. prevention is far better than cure!

Hi Glen, thanks for your answer. I've already read all of your posted advices... mosquitos do really like me, so I'm really concerned about the coming attacks. Did you hear something about Vitamin B and mosquitos? There are 2 different versions: the first, that they don't like it when you have a high Vitamin B bloodlevel, the second, that mosquitos even prefer it. <BR>Can you tell me something about the mosquito-nets in the accomodations? Is ist necessary to bring your own? <BR>Thanks for another reply if you get the chance... <BR>

I don't remember seeing any mosquitos on my trip to Sri Lanka and I was all over the countryside between 28Oct and 08Nov. I didn't have a mosquito net anywhere. All rooms had either air conditioning (death to mosquitos) or a ceiling fan which I thought was for keeping cool but may actually have kept mosquitos away. You should pass by your doctor to get all of the normal shots. It may be too late for some of them now though. <BR>I left a post on sites to see in Sri Lanka earlier (reply to Eden Hotel post). If you are taking the malaria pills STOP!! <BR> <BR>One of their side effects (depending on which one, I believe that there are two kinds) are neurological. I took two weeks worth and I became a paranoid, panic attached basked case. I even developed a petrifying fear of flying. A friend who is a doctor advised me to stop immediately in taking them and not to be to concerned about the malaria. Just make sure you have jungle strength mosquito repellent. <BR> <BR>Have a safe trip and don't drink the water!! <BR>

Hi Inga, <BR> <BR>In reply to the previous letter from Wynette, I know nothing about Sri Lanka, but my children and I took malaria pills when we visited Bali last year and had no ill side effects what-so-ever. I have never heard of anyone having side effects, I would think that Wynette's case must be very rare. <BR> <BR>Teresa
