Time in Bangkok?

Hello -
For all of you who have been to Bangkok before, how many days do you really think we need there? We are heading to Thailand on our honeymoon and also going to Chiang Mai, the Golden Triangle and to Ko Samui and are trying to figure out how many days we need in Bangkok. Thanks so much!

Well, you will get several different opinions here as some people say no less than a week and others get out as soon as possible.

It will help to know how long you will be in Thailand, when and what your interests are.

We were in Thailand for 3 weeks in Feb. and we spent 6 nights in Bangkok. For a three week trip that was good for us but I will definitely be back and I hope to stay for another 5-6 nights next time!

How long is your trip? I wouldn't recommend fewer than 3 or 4 nights in any one place...so with your 4 places, I'd say your trip should be at least 2 weeks.
I might do
Bangkok 2
Chiang Rai 2-3
Chiang Mai 3-4
Koh Samui 5
Bangkok 4

It really depends on your interests. Last December we spent a week in the Chiang Mai area and could have spent much longer...we really liked it. We also love Bangkok, and spent only 3 days there this past trip and it felt way too short, even though we'd been there 3 times before. In the past, we spent 10 days on Koh Samui just relaxing, and that was great for us...we did that 3 times, then the resort we loved so much was sold and we haven't been back to Samui. Others, though, will say a few days in Samui is plenty.

I think you need to decide whether you want your honeymoon to be the type of trip where you settle into a place for a while and get comfortable, or if you want to cover a lot of ground. Then you could plan your itinerary accordingly.

I don't know how long your trip is, but since it's a honeymoon, I'd imagine not a real long time. So,I'd say 6-7 full days. I've been going there since the 90s and just spent 3 weeks in Bangkok, a few months ago, and I still haven't done everything that I want to do. Happy Travels!

let me stay first if you are arriving in bkk from overseas the first day or two is almost down time---recovery....so in addition to that i would want 3 days for a first timer...

have you thought of only doing CM or the golden triangle and not both?

ideally i would want 5 days in bkk at beginning, 3-7 days in samui, 3 days in CM and up to 4 days in GT, depending on what you want to do there....i would end off with a minimum of 2 days in bkk at the end...

At a minimum, 3 full days. However, many of us think BKK is a truly special place and 5 days is necessary. There is no way to tell whether you will love BKK or think it's crowded and polluted. It's a personal thing. 3 days will allow you to see the major sights, shop, and get a feel for the city. Of course, you have to decide before you go. I suggest that you use your preference for large cities as a guide. If you love them, increase your BKK time. If not, decrease the time. Also, I strongly suggest that you stay on the river in BKK, it provides a break.

Hi!

We just got back from Thailand where we spent 8 days and 9 nights. Since we were so short on time we spent only three days in Bangkok, with one of those days being a trip to Kanchanaburi.

It wasn't enough time! We aren't even big city people and I found that we definitely didn't have enough time to see all we wanted to see even though I pushed pretty hard.

That said, as many of the much more experienced folks have said, much depends on the amount of time you have and what you want from your vacation.

i would say 3 nights at the peninsula would be a great way to end your honeymoon. it is magnificent. out of this world.

i might only spend, at most, a night or two there at the beginning of your trip. in my mind, bangkok is something of an acquired taste: it's very dirty and smoggy and traffic and not so pleasant to walk around. but once you get onto its wavelength, there are lots of wonderful things about it: the food, the people, the shopping, the spirit of the place.

but on your honeymoon it might be nicer and more relaxing to be out in the natural beauty of thailand and experience bangkok at the end of your trip through the lovel prism that is the peninsula.
