Tibet closed in June & July???

I saw a thread on the TA site that says that Tibet is officially closed to tourists for the months of June & July. Does anyone have any reliable information on this?

There is never totally reliable information, unless you know the top Chinese officials in Beijing personally.

Anyways, in a blog posted two weeks ago by the agent that organized my visit last summer, they think there's a 90% chance there could be some closure in July. As of this moment in early June, there's no restriction. But the later you get into June and July, the higher chance foreigners can't get in.

Of course, in a way, these agents have to play it safe. Worse thing they can do is take your money, book all your tickets, and then found out you can't get it. So, they'd rather cut the business of the foreigners and concentrate on local Chinese and those from Hong Kong and Macau, who don't require a permit.

FYI TripAdvertizer has degenerated basically

to a for profit tout/spam site

Moderators allow agents/scammers to tout as "experts"

Caveat Emptor many fake post scammers touts there.

Expedia is trying to juice profits

to spin it off as a separate company and as a result

quality has diminished dramatically.

South China Morning Post in Hong Kong reported today (6/17) that China has closed Tibet to foreign visitors till July 27. They quote several travel agents in Lhasa and Beijing.

I am going to several countries in Asia in July and August; was going to Tibet in July. Received the following from my tour guide in China: 2011 is the 60th anniversary year of Tibet liberation. The local government will hold a grand ceremony. For the sake of safety, the local government will not issue the Tibet Travel Permit for foreign visitors in July.

We had planned to go to Tibet---not now. What a disappointment~

My friends and 8 of their friends flew all the way to Beijing from Hawaii, only to find out their Tibet visas had been denied. As Tibet was the reason for the trip, it was rather disappointing.
