Maya and Sat who run SB think of it as a two-night stay. Unfortunately, we didn't have two nights. You'll have to decide whether YOU have two nights.

Does anyone know if Shapura Bagh has air condition..I think that will be important in late July.

You haven't read the website at all, have you? Of course they have a/c.

I did but not carefully...I saw a photo with a potable fan and got panicky!!

I have been re=reading older posts...Dogster u mentioned in one post that the " Oberoi Delhi was nothing special"...I am getting more comfortable with experiencing other places than just oberoi.....I want our first nights to be special...would you suggest someplace else? Hope I am not driving people nuts...

I remember that Dogster checked out of the Imperial before spending the night. What was the story there Dogster? Something about the Dog's sensitive nose? We common folk thought the Imperial was quite nice...

Four nights at the Oberoi in Udaipur is really too long. (I was there for four nights ans was going stir crazy toward the end) It is a lovely hotel, but Udaipur is a pretty limited place. I walked to town from the Udaivilas a number of times, so I didn't find it that far. I liked the exercize. The Devigarh is lovely (had lunch there) , but I wouldn't stay in two places just to experience it. Just stay in one place or the other.
If I were you, I would take vp_singh's advice and go to Jodhpur. (which I adored) He's not blowing smoke when he says you might connect with the maharajah of Jodhpur, Gaj Singh. He isn't like the tacky ones in Jaipur and Udaipur who sell access to their fake dinners. He is a true businessman and gentleman and appreciates visitors. When we were there, he invited us as his guests to a polo match, sat next to us and explained all the plays. He was charming. And, the Mehrangarh fort is magnificent--far more than the Amber fort in my opinion. Anyway, it sounds as if you have quite the itinerary and don't need my advice, nor another destination, but since you have everyone else's two cents, I thought I'd throw in mine : ) Too many wonderful choices, too little time. |
The Oberoi is a lovely hotel with good pools and nice if small grounds, luxurious rooms and great staff. It has several good restaurants. I have enjoyed many stays at the Oberoi and would certainly rank it with the Imperial, although they have a different ambience. The Obeori is the kind of place where your feet sink into the carpet. The Imperial has more of a colonial Raj feel to it. (Wooden and marble floors in the rooms, so no sinking into the carpet.) The Imperial has a nice lawn area with palm trees and you can sit in a wicker chair and drink tea and pretend you are Lord Mountbatten. The Obeoroi has a nice lounge where you can sit in a leather chair and drink scotch and pretend you are a Bollywood star (and look around, one may be sitting next to you.)
The Oberoi put in a new pool a year or so ago, and has a wonderful spa. They also have redone their rooms. For a tourist, the location of the Imperial may be better, as you can walk to things. I also hear good things about the Shangri-La, although the rooms are small (this can be an issue at the Oberori too, so try to go for larger rooms if you can.) If you stay at the Oberoi, try to get a room with a golf course view, I think the view on that side is nicer and it’s a little bit quieter on that side. |
I appreciate your input....and everyones...I am thinkin maybe 3 nights udaipur...at this point and then stopping on way to Jaipur and staying at Shapura Bagh....

Shapura Bagh has a/c. It may flick off for 15-20 seconds when the power fails, but even a high maintenance girl like you can handle that!

Forgive my ignorance - but when you have a driver/guide with you daily for several days when you travel , where does he stay overnight? Are his accommodations, meals etc included in the daily car rental rate that you negociate? Or does he arrange this on his own?
|
the drivers all know of cheap places to stay and take care of themselves....sometimes they sleep in the auto if need be... they can stay for only a few dollars....
