Things I HAVE TO DO whilst in KL! =)

Hi Gang!

Tickets are paid and I am locked into 7 days in KL Malaysia.

Does anyone have any recommendations on things I have to do whilst in KL?

Thanks in advance

Eek

if you are into shopping, take the metro to the mid-valley mall. an air-conditioned multi-level shopping mall that will take you at least two days to walk through.

Take a two day trip to Fraser's hill, rent a car, its 95 kms north of KL, the drive is beautiful and so is the quaint Colonial resort. Two days of waking upto the crisp mountain air, walking through the forest trails and a bit of golf! Just the perfect recipe for a therapeutic weekend.

The Bird Park is excellent. Probably second to Singapore's.

If you are interested in local crafts (especially textiles) visit the Central market, a small market in an old builing in the middle of KL. I always find something interesting to buy there. You might be interested in the Selangor pewter factory. And I agree with others, to take a couple of day trip outside the city.

we took a taxi out to the sangalor pewter factory on the outskirts of town....they have a fantastic factory store and great prices....the items are very nice....keep the taxi while you are shopping as we had a very difficult time getting one back to the city...

If you want to experience some island life not too far from KL (couple of hours if I remember well), I can highly recommend going to Pankor. You can take a taxi. There is the fancy Pankor laut on it's on island but we liked to stay at Teluk Dalam. It has been a while since we lived in Malaysia but we used to love to go there and rent scooters to explore the island. The Bangsar night market (Saturday from late afternoon) was a lot of fun, lots of restaurants and bars with the market in the mids of it all.

Seven days held hostage by KL? That's too many days. Kathie is right - The truth is out there, in the countryside!

OK, seriously. Apart KLCC, shopping, Central Market, pewters and parks, here are some insider accounts;

- shop at One Utama Shopping Center. It's roughly 30 mins from city center and local/expats throng it for branded stuffs. Lots of local and western eateries. The place is huge. Another place worth mentioning for shopping - Sunway Pyramid.

- check out www.kakiseni.com, an informative site on local performing art programs around KL to get an idea of what's on. Interesting stuffs on May, "Screwed", "A Tale of Unrecruited Love" and "Lily Can't Speak".

- take a walk in Forest Research Institute of Malaysia in Kepong, some 40 mins taxi from KL. Fabulous collection of rainforest trees, herbs and such. Don't forget its hanging bridge canopy walk.

- eat at Coliseum Cafe, the best sizzling steak in town and the oldest colonial-style restaurant in KL.

- you must spend a day sightseeing in Putrajaya, a futuristic city wired entirely with fibre optics. Don't miss the jaw-dropping maroon-coloured grand mosque perched by the lake. Non-muslim is allow inside for a peek.

- Carey island, about 1.5 hrs from KL, to take a good look at Mahmeri aborigine seafaring tribe. Fantastic woodwork and craft.

- come visit me in Ipoh, 2hrs north KL, and go off-grid to explore caves, visit Orang Asli tribal villages, dip in uncharted waterfalls, say hello to leeches, rare plants and eat things you can hardly pronouce.

Hey Eek, I just remember you are the chap who asked about wearing a tuxedo for a wedding in Klang. Carey island is very near Klang. Ask your relatives about it. Better still, take another journey to Pulau Ketam (Crab Island) nearby to enjoy some seafood and fishing village life.
