The truth about elephant tourism
A link to an interesting and well considered article from Rough Guides on the often emotive topic of Elephant Tourism

Thanks for this link, Crellston. And I love that they give a number of ethical and humane places for people to interact with elephants - more than I knew about.
I'm cutting and pasting the ones they mention for people whop won't click on links: "Thailand has emerged at the forefront of ethical elephant tourism, with reputable sanctuaries including the pioneering Elephant Nature Park and Burm and Emily’s Elephant Sanctuary both near Chiang Mai, the Surin Project in the northeast of the country, and Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary, near Sukhothai. Elsewhere in Southeast Asia there is the Elephant Valley Project at Sen Monorom in northeastern Cambodia, and the Elephant Conservation Center in Sayaboury Province in Laos. Ethical elephant tourism in South Asia is considerably less well developed. In Sri Lanka, the fledgling Elephant Freedom Project near Kandy and the Elephant Conservation and Care Center, Mathura are currently leading the way." |
Thanks crellston and Kathie. Good to have some options to give people.

I'm on my way to Surin tomorrow to visit 17 street begging Elephants that were taken off the streets by Lek of Elephant Nature Park. They are starting a new
Sanctuary in Surin. More to follow. |
