GypsyMaiden - I stayed at an excellent boutique hostel in Bangkok's Old Town (not far from Khao San Road). This hostel only has private rooms and the only reason they call it a hostel is because many of the rooms don't have a private bath. I highly recommend this gem - it really made my trip to Thailand - it was really unique, friendly and something special. I forget the exact price for a single last year - about 800THB w/free breakfast and well worth it.

In my experience, breakfast is not usually included in the cheaper places. So what, there are plenty of restaurants around where you can get western or Asian food fairly reasonably. Prices over much of SE Asia are so different to Australia that it seems unreal. For the sort of accommodation I pay $15US for in Siem Reap I'd expect to pay close to $100A for here. That includes air conditioning, satellite TV, shower and toilet and a small pool. Plus a large, albeit rather hard bed - very important for me because of my height! Expect beds to be generally harder than you are used to.

However, I would suggest $9 is probably a bit low in most countries. (Laos is probably the exception and I have not been to Burma) Of course there are always dormitories if you really want to economise!

No Silverwool; in fact accommodation in the Lao PDR is not that cheap. You can get cheaper accommodation in Thailand.

I paid between 40,000 and 60,000 kip in Laos 18 months ago. (Specifically Luang Prabang, Phonsovan and Vang Vieng) Maybe its gone up since then.

As far as I know, things are way more expensive in Thailand than Laos. Are accommodations an exception?

Actually most things are dearer in Lao than Thailand. That includes food in restaurants, mini marts and accommodation. A lot of food is imported from Thailand. Many Lao go to Nong Khai and come back with piles of shopping. Clothes are a bit cheaper here, though again shoes are cheaper in Thailand.

Vientianeboy - I'm going to LP next year and have been looking at guesthouses there. Is LP more expensive than Vientiane - the guesthouses are not exactly cheap there. Can I get by on $50. a day for everything (like I do in Vietnam)?
