Hi Sue !<BR><BR>only 4 weeks to go !!! WOW !! <BR><BR>I can remember how exciting the anticipation was with only weeks to go. I'm planning a return to Bangkok, and beyond sometime next year. As I've just mentioned your brilliant journal I thought I should top this for more people to read.I hope you manage to see the Grand Palace the next time! (You must be about the only visitor to BK who HASN'T seen it!!!! Seriously, you will be astounded with it,it is quite overwhelming)

We are cruising from Bangkok to Sydney November 26th. The cruiseline offers a pre-cruise tour of Bangkok. My question: would we be better off to tour on our own? Safety etc, with just the two of us. Most often we just get our own cabs or go it alone, this part of the world is new to us. Best hotel, what not to miss and anything else much appreciated.

Kathy<BR>I don't normally like tours either but we took them in Bangkok. We only had 2 full days there and decided just to pick tours as BK is vast and we didn't have the time to "find our feet". How long have you got? Our first day we went on a "temple tour"- an absolute must is the Grand Palace, it is breathtaking and as , a previous poster said, a little overwhelming with so much gold and glittering stones. We visited Wat Po with the gold reclining Buddah and Wat Bin where we lucky enough to see a monk being invested. We also saw a lot of the districts of BK, including Chinatown.Our second day took us to the Summer Palace and the ancient capital of Ayutthaya followed by a cruise down the Chao Phya river. One thing we did do on our own was a visit to Jim Thomsons house. He was a famous silk merchant. It is well worth a visit- just beautiful and in such a tranquil setting it is hard to believe that it is right in the middle of BK. If you go there be prepared to spend a fortune in the shop- I certainly could have!!!<BR> Other things we didn't have time to do this time are a dinner cruise,the floating market , the Rose Garden and , if you are there at the weekend you must go to Chatuchak market.<BR> Try eating at Cabbages and Condoms.Very well known, superb food and some interesting decorations!!!!!!( all profits go to HIV awareness and family planning programmes).We can also recommend Lemongrass , a restaurant that is actually a large house - try their lemongrass chicken.<BR>The nightmarket is also a bit of an experience.If you go, whatever they say the cost of something is, pay about half! <BR>For hotels, not being sure of what you want to pay, do a search here and you will find loads of info on hotels. If you are new to this part of the world you will be very happy with what you get for your money there! Our hotel room looked like something out of a film set!Hope this helps.

I would recommend that if it were within Bangkok, then do it yourself.<BR><BR>With the Sky train and the river boats, tuk tuks and taxis, it's easy and safe to navigate the city.<BR><BR>If you are interested in doing day trips out of the capital, then it would be far easier to tag along with an organise tour.
