I have been to Thailand on my own, and via a tour and highly recommend the tour done by Overseas Adventure Travel. I did that tour in March of this year and it was wonderful. All inclusive including a nice hotel in Bangkok that was close to everything with reasonable prices etc. The key to OATS travel is that there is a maximum of 16 people on any tour and they stop whereever you want.
Naturally you get to go to the "shops" that they recommend, but that's the price you pay.
The tour begins and ends in Bangkok and includes Chaign Mai and Chaing Rai, the Golden Triangle (which is worthless), a quick trip into Loas and Burma, plus Bridge on the River Kawi. All accomodations are a.c. and clean, and there is no hassle at the airport as they pick you up. Guides speak very good English and can fill you in on all the local gossip.
Good luck and good traveling

My wife and I went with Overseas Adventure Travel to Thailand, with extensions to Cambodia and North Viet Nam. This was in February, 200l. We still think of this as one of the best trips we ever took. Our guide was superb, the hotels were excellent, the food was topnotch, and we simply had a marvelous experience. Could not recommend it highly enough.

If you want to go to the luxury hotel in Bangkok, where collect the sculpture and architecture of the Sukhothai Arts (The Sukhothai Period was considered the peak of Art & Architecture in Thailand.).(http://www.sukhothai.com). You should go there. You can check the hotel location in the web site.
