Actually, Phi Phi looks great too. Stay there and I could hike up to the Viewpoint as well as take the boats from there to Pileh, Bamboo and other nearby islands, though it doesn't seem to be cheaper than taking boat cruises out of Phuket or Krabi.

Rawai is a busy tourist area and Promthep Cape is just a viewpoint between Rawai seafront and Nai Harn beach and there is a small pretty beach along the way. You can walk it but be careful of traffic plus hiking/walking is not that safe...see tourist raped and murdered a few months ago on another island whilst hiking.

Yikes!

Is it because it's so remote? What about muggings or other violent crime like being robbed at knifepoint?

I booked near Bang Tao beach. Hope that area is okay to walk around at night for dinner.

Bang Tao is fine, tourist area...just be careful if you are considering going off the beaten track hiking anywhere in Thailand.

"What about muggings or other violent crime like being robbed at knifepoint?” Just google the comparative crime stats for Thailand and say the USA and you will find that violent crime rates are a fraction of those in the US and in many other developed countries

I have had no issues hiking off the beaten track in Thailand or anywhere else in Asia for that matter. Be wary of scaremongering. Just take the usual precautions you hopefully would anywhere else and enjoy your holiday
