Thailand next January

Anyone going to be in these places when I am?

Bangkok - Jan. 11 thru 14 and 20 thru 24
Chiang Mai - Jan. 1 thru 10
Yangon, Burma - Jan. 11 thru 14

Would love to meet up with some fodorites.
I'll be at the Baan Orapin in CM, Oriental (what a surprise!) in Bangkok and the Savoy in Yangon.

Not 100% certain but think I'll be in Chiang Mai with a friend when you are there (staying at Tamarind Village)....will let you know for sure when it gets closer since it would be fun to connect there!

Would be fun if we could meet.Did you end up booking the thai flight out of NY using miles? Weren't we "talking" about that awhile ago?

Anyone else going to be in Thailand then or thinking about it?

Kathie Jul 14th, 2005 05:51 AM

Sorry, Gloria. I'd love to meet, but I'll be in SE Asia in November - December.

glorialf Jul 14th, 2005 06:37 AM

Kathie-- Maybe in 2007 we can coordinate trips and visit each other at our favorite riverside hotels. :-)

kathrynj Jul 17th, 2005 09:40 AM

Yes Gloria, you are correct. Got the Thai non-stop out of JFK in Business Class. Will be flying from Bangkok to Hong Kong then Singapore to SFO. I'll let you know when things are confirmed for Chiang Mai!

I have a friend getting married in BKK in January so might be there at the tail end of your trip. I don't know which hotel or serviced apt at this time. We are still in the very early stages of considering making the trip. The friend will be visiting us in late Aug/early Sept and we will then begin to make some plans.

Gloria, our paths almost cross in BKK but by a few days will miss you. Thank you in advance as we have booked NyiNyi for one day in Yangon during our 6 day trip to Yangon/Inle Lake.

glorialf Sep 21st, 2005 01:10 PM

When will you have Nyi Nyi?

gilawi01 Sep 21st, 2005 01:56 PM

I'll be in Thailand too from January 10-26 (including 4 days in Angkor Wat). Still working on the final schedule, but this is most likely how is going to be:

Jan 10-14 Bangkok

14-17 Angkor Wat

17-22 Chiang Mair/Chiang Rai (still figuring out how to split the time, Will gladly receive any recommendations)

22-26 Bangkok

I'll be back home, from Bangkok, about 4 days before you arrive there. Happy Travels!

kathrynj Sep 22nd, 2005 03:16 PM

Gloria,Posted a reply to the Asia/Thailand hotel post but you may not have seen it---will be in Chiang Mai Jan 7-11 (leave early am) and will be staying at Tamarind Village. We can coordinate as it gets closer!

IsisMnroe Sep 24th, 2005 09:21 AM

Monday, December 19, 2005, NyiNyi guide for one day in Yangon. Anything special recommendation for the one day with NyiNyi? We have 1 1/2 days in Yangon before heading on to Inle Lake for 3 nights and one day in Yangon. Thank you again.

glorialf Sep 24th, 2005 09:49 AM

Isis-- what are your interests? The one must of course is the Shwedagon Pagoda but you don't necessarily need Nyi Nyi to take you there.

If you're willing to get up really early I would have him take you to the fish market. That was a highlight for us. Now tell me more about the kind of things you like to do and I'll make some suggestions.

Hi Gloria,

On January 10, my wife and I will be finishing up our 4-week trip with two nights in Bangkok. We have taken people's advice and decided to splurge on the Peninsula. I believe you will be at the Oriental. I don't know how far apart they are. As it gets closer perhaps we can trade info. At this point, we're looking at the last 2 days (we leave early on January 12) as a chance to pamper ourselves, but that is the trip in our minds and we have not embarked on the trip with our bodies.

glorialf Sep 24th, 2005 10:34 AM

A;ibi== the Pen is right across the river from the Oriental. Short boat ride. Let's stay in touch.

IsisMnroe Sep 24th, 2005 01:04 PM

Hi Gloria,
The Shewandon Pagoda we can do ourselves. We are early risers and would like to do the fish market. In Yangon: I would like to do local things, markets, sounds like tea room may be good, boutique items (purses) but more like few of a kind designed items, not mass produced, and ethnic dancing shows. We like to go to restaurants where the locals eat. Places to take picturesque photos.

glorialf Sep 24th, 2005 01:49 PM

then definitely do the fish market. Nyi Nyi will take you to local restaurants that are good and definitely do the tea shops with him. Skip the reclining buddha -- hideous looking. I did no shopping in Yangon so can't help there but there are certainly lots of markets. Tell Nyi Nyi you want to go to a food market if you want to see locals.
