Thailand in August
 

Is it worth going to Thailand if the only month available is August? If so, what itinerary is recommended for a two week visit?

I go twice a year..Dec/Jan and Aug/Sept and have no problem with going in August...fewer people. And Yeah, the weather can be tempermental, but hasn't really stopped me from doing anything that I wanted to do. Now, if you're a beach person, that's a different story. Happy Travels!

Well, you are my only reply so far. thanks for your views. If you have time to make any suggestions as to itinerary, they would be appreciated. I know to avoid the beaches then, but where is best for a first time visitor at that time of year? Do you use a particular travel agency for Thailand?

In order to get more responses, it would be helpful to be more specific... What are your interests, what do you want to do on your trip, what kind of traveler are you, what's your price range? You wll not need a travel agency. We will be glad to help plan a wonderful trip. What is your budget for hotels per night? This will help us make recommendation. Also, do you like temples, ruins, elephants or shopping? This will guide as as well.

i was in Thailand in August / september 2006, and didnt find it to be a problem weather wise. we spent our beach time in Koh Samui, but better to ask the more experienced fodorites to give you a rain report for that season in order to decide what island or beach to go to.

work on your itinerary.. check lots of info here on fodors, and once you have a bit of a picture, get more specific in regards to hotels and stuff...

In two weeks you could easily do Bangkok, something up north in Thailand, and a beach location. A few days in BKK to start (plus a day or two at the end as well), then off to perhaps Chiang Mai and follow up with a few days on Koh Samui. Should be enough time for 3 locations.

August is okay, I like it. Prices for hotel room are cheaper and fewer tourists clogging up things.

Yeah, a little more rain but it stops in an hour or two. You can still get a tan at a beach.

Bangkok, Pattaya and Chiang Mai have many travel agencies. Travel agents are the brokers for tour companies. Check out a couple travel agencies close to your hotel and compare prices. Check out the menu list of tours that they have, tour company picks you up at your hotel and returns you there at the end of the ride.

I go to Thailand and surrounding countries every August usually for 4 weeks or so and have for the last 15 years. This year I need to go in July because of other commitments but I don't have any hesitation in saying August (or July) is a good time to go. It can rain but not usually enough to interrupt my travels. Only one year in the North did we have such rain that the rivers rose so much that had we not got out of the village we were in that day we would have been there rather longer than we wanted! Big advantage is that accommodation is cheaper and there are fewer people at the tourist attractions.

As Guenmai says if you are a beach person the weather is more significant but you just need to choose the right area - the east coast doesn't get the rain so much in August but the prices there will be dearer.

I've never used a travel agency to organise things - its a very easy country to negotiate.

The tiger temple is one of the must in Thailand. If you would like to have closely wonderful experiences with the tigers, you have to do it.

Bangkok plus Chiang Mai and Koh Samui you be an intro if you have a few weeks.
It very much depends on the sort of things you want to do, shopping, sightseeing, beach, mountains/jungle etc. There is plenty of variation.
