Wow! Posted it yesterday and so many replies! Dissapointment with wines in Thailand beacuse this is what we like with dinner. However since Thai food as someone posted goes better with beer, we will have thai food for dinner with beer.

We prefer light beer.

Actually, 2 dinners are taken care of since we will be on Manohra cruise. Bob - do you remember what do they serve there to drink?

The rest we will see as we go. Probably too much trouble to bring byow. Will stick with water and beer. My husband loves German beer too.

this past may, i paid $30 for a so-so bottle of calif. wine(i think it was calif.wine,less than$10 in us) in the lounge at the ambassador hotel. it was worth it for me, as the service was great, and they had a nice duo(bass and piano player), with a singer, singing tunes that i recognized(old standards). now orgy7 gives us winos the good news about aussie wines. they are great wines, and have good value. looking forward to the aussie vino in bkk next spring.

emtravel: also, the last time i was in hk(5yrs ago) i had the roasted pig knuckles at jimmys kitchen in central. if the restaurant is still there, i recommend you try the dish. i try to go there everytime i visit hk. don't let the name fool you, its a very nice restaurant.

Yes wine is expensive in Thailand and Hong Kong, at least in restaurants although it is more manageable if bought from a store.We love our wine but baulk at ordering it in those places. We usually end up with Singha beer in Thailand and Tsing Tao in Hong Kong.Hopefully for us and the Australian wine industry, the new trade agreement between Oz and Thailand will improve things. San Miguel is not a bad lager, with the exception of its color. It looks like you-know-what.

The problem is that it was the only domestic beer in HK for decades, and is therefore the beer of choice of all the blue collar and working class people. It doesn't help that they sell lots of the larger bottles (750ml?) cheap. Therefore you won't find many people drinking San Miguel in better restaurants or bars. It's too bad, but hey...
