Thailand - camera film and money questions

Hi,

I just booked my first trip to Thailand. In guidebooks it says people can only bring 5 rolls of film. Is this enforced? Is camera film expensive in Thailand?
Also, is it just as easy to exchange Canadian traveller's cheques or cash as American?

Hi Dianne:

Just returned from Thailand. We took l2 rolls of film - no problems. We could just as well have bought it there - prices were very good. Take a few to get you started and then go from there.

We took most of our money in American dollars (travellers cheques) - great rate - even after the exchange. However, there is a charge everytime you cash a travellers cheque - 23 bhat I think - ATM's are readily available.

If you want anymore information, e-mail me.

Have a great trip!

I go to Thailand about 8-10 times a year. I am also an avid photographer and have taken as many as 40 roles of film into the country, don't worry about it. Do worry about some of the x-ray machines in the airports especially if you are going to do a lot of flying while in country. one or two times through the x-ray won't make a noticable difference unless you are using special films (1000 or higher or infra-red film). As for money its no problem either. Bangkok is a world class city which depends on your travel dollars, I doubt you will find many problems there. Enjoy and if you have any other questions drop me an e-mail and I'll answere any question.

BRAD

Can't really add to what Brad said. A lot of countries have these "official" policies regarding amount of film, number of cameras, etc., but they are rarely if ever enforced.

Thanks everyone. My trip isn't until November, so I'm sure I'll be back with more questions.

Dianne

No problem with film--and things are really not expensive. We just returned from a trip to Bangkok, Changmai, Changrai, singapore and Hongkong. My suggestion is to use an ATM card. Available all over--really. Some are Visa affiliates and some Master Card but you can find one with your bank's affiliate with no problem. I have one with no fee from my credit union and the exchange rate is great--and no fees at all.
Also credit cards work all over too
Forget travelers checks. I do not know about Canadian currency but look into the ATM card It works all over the world
