thai wedding
Has anyone done a Thai wedding? I am thinking of getting married in Thailand I will be here a couple of months and would like a recomendation of a "non touristy" wedding that is unique and romantic not a resort wedding. thanks |
bluebella did one last summer and told us everything she was doing here on fodors and how she did it....find her thread and follow it....i have her name wrong, but someone will tell you exactly....she owes us a trip report which is coming too...

This is a link to her report that she made while she was in Thailand. If you then click on her name, you'll bring up all of her posts and be able to read through all of them easily. |
yes check Bella's reports. One thing to note, that is the ceromony vs the 'legal side', I honestly would suggest you do the 'legal paperwork side' at home first, simple with maybe family a friends, then do the 'cermony style wedding blessing', you 'can' do the paperwork/legal side but it means paperwork trail, letter from your Embassy in BKK etc, plus for many having the 'legal/paperwork' side done in home country keeps the legal side clear and easy.

I second JamesA's suggestions -- if you are American, the www.state.gov site has a website for the Embassy in Bangkok with very detailed instructions about US Nationals getting married in Thailand. I would expect most other countries' foreign ministries to have similar information posted.
..and congratulations! <g> Lisa |
I love my Thai wedding certificate and would not have done the legal bit at home! It is beautiful with pink flowers on it!
However, we did use an agent to do the legal bit in Bangkok. This involved us meeting up with her for about an hour to go to the British embassy and then she did the rest. If we had done it ourselves it would have been another three days of schlepping around various government offices I think. The amphur (registrar) met us on the beach after our buddhist ceremony and then western vows and we signed our legal documentation there and then. This meant all our ceremonies - legal, spiritual and emotional - were all on the same day which was the 9th of August and the full moon to boot. The legal bit cost us 20,000 baht I think through a Samui wedding service. We chose to meet up with the agent again for about 2 hours at the end of the visit to register our wedding with the British embassy. This isn't a necessary step - the wedding is legal and recognised, in the UK at least, without this. But my husband is a historian and wanted future generations to be able to trace our wedding in the UK registers. We got married at www.rockyresort.com - we in no way felt it was a 'resort' wedding. They do relatively few weddings and each one is carefully planned and tailored. You get married in a quiet and intimate place. I did read about weddings in Chiang Mai too which sounded lovely but I particularly wanted to be able to hear the sea whilst I got married :) BB |
Thanks Everyone!
Bella_Bluebell, on your suggestion I checked out the one in Chiang Mai. http://Thailandweddings.com I phoned them on a USA based isp "Virtual" phone number which costs me nothing as all my calls to USA are free! I got the owner herself. We talked forever, and it seemed like just the wedding for us a real Buddhist wedding at her country home. Which she use only on weekends or for weddings, so is truly private (nobody is hanging around on your wedding night! a one acre of private garden on a large orchard ..Whoopi ) complete with Jacuzzi !!!! She includes the Thai legal paperwork in the weddings and I can get the affidavits at the local Canadian consulate in Chiang Mai too, then she has her man do the rest in Bangkok, or if I want I can do it in Bangkok too. Seems so easy! I am going to have a wedding certificate with pink flowers too! The best of all was I got to talk with an English couple ,Walter and Tracey from London, that had their wedding there a couple weeks earlier. It seems they had 20 guests, mostly from the UK and a few fellow travellers! While Jit [the owner] and I were talking they had dropped by her shop on their way back from traveling the "Golden Triangle" and seems they are having a "gap year", a strange saying for a year off from work! They described their wedding as like having a wedding with your Thai family in Chiang Mai, not a company! They couldn't stop talking about it all, the temple, the romantic venue, the fire lanterns, the monks, the food and the families delight with the whole wedding. The wedding sounded just perfect! Just what we are looking for! |
