Thai Style hotel in Bangkok
 

I've spent several hours researching but no luck. I will be in Bangkok May 9 - 14 or so and am looking for a Thai Style hotel either near the river or centrally located. My budget is $100/night no more. I'm staying many nights in Asia and really can't go higher. Any suggestions please. I'm always researching at the last minute. Sorry about that. Thank you

We stayed at Arun Residence in January - the Arun Suite (with the most wonderful terrace in Bangkok) is above your price but the other rooms are close - we loved the location and the views of the river - but have to mention that the other rooms have peek-a-boo views of the river rather than big expansive views.

davis hotel might work for you...

what exactly is "thai style" in your opinion??

on of the guest houses often mentioned on the sois off of sukhumvit...

soi 11 is one of them....soi 11 is the name....

Bob, are you thinking of Suk 11? It's a budget place, probably $20-30 a night.

What about Ibrik on the River, Old Bangkok Inn, Silom Serene, Chakrabongse Villas, Dream, Aurum the River Place, Majestic Grande, Davis, Siam Heritage,...actually, that's all I can think of right now, and not sure of the prices exactly of each one, but I think they are all around or less than $100.00/night. I'm sure there are more choices. Why don't you try looking at the listings at www.sawadee.com? You can sort by price if you like.

Wanda, Bob and Kathie(and anybody else interested) - please note that much of Sukhumvit road from Soi 62 to Soi 103 will be closed off for the Skytrain expansion construction beginning today. Traffic for the next 7 months will be chaotic all up and down Sukhumvit road.

KimJapan - thank you I have checked and am considering Old Bangkok Inn, Ibrik and checked Chakrabongse Villas. I think this last one is far away and I've read expensive for what you actually get. I also checked the website you refer to. I will definitely check out the Arun Residence and others mentioned. We go May 9 so I'm scrambling. Definitely will need to keep in mind that construction! What a great tip that we wouldn't have heard about except thru this forum. Will continue checking, so all great ideas are welcome. Thank you.

It is only 6795 Baht for one night for superior room. It is value for 5 star property in Bangkok.

Hanuman, next 7 months? Please make sure this is all cleaned up by the time I arrive in Bangkok in eaerly November. LOL - I figure if they say 7 months it'll be 14 months.

Tozzman, the OP asked for something in the $100 dollar range, and the Sukothai certainly isn't that!

that area of sukhumvit was a mess last fall....

most tourists don't go out that far except for the jt outlet

I will be travelling to Bangkok with my 24 year old son. I have looked at Dream, Arun Residence (althought they don't answer my emails), Ibrik on the river and Old Bangkok Inn. I am certain my son will want to go out at night without his mother! However, being his mother I of course am concerned about travel back to the hotel. It seems that Dream would be the logical hotel for access to nightlife (I think it is near the Bed nightclub). Any thoughts on this dilemna?

taxis are very easy back to the hotel....he's a big boy i am sure he will find a way...

Yes of course he is a big boy and will be fine. Manages his own independent life very well.

Forever the parent is true! I had a friend who at 95 I overheard talking to her 72 year old son. Without any visuals or knowledge of age you would have sworn he was 17! She always worried about him despite his very successful career as a business owner.

I heard from Arun Residence, Old Bangkok Inn and Dream. Dream ( a bit more expensive) closer to sky train, the commercial heart and more nightlife and restaurants; but more difficult to access the river and the historic city.

Arun with lovely views of the river, good reviews but perhaps more difficult to access restaurants and other activities at night.

OBI very near Khao San Road (good for the 24year old activities), historic areas and river, great reviews on service but I read the mattresses are ultra firm (not good for me so much).

In the end is location of the most importance? I know transporting within the city can be time consuming. My heart says the view of the river, my brain says the comfort and access of Dream.

Gpanda gave me an idea in another post, perhaps 3 days BKK 5 elsewhere and 2 days BKK at the end. And I'll try two hotels!

Another option not yet mentioned is The Eugenia (http://www.theeugenia.com). I think it's close to Dream, which is a bit over-priced IMO.

I looked at the Eugenia, but was put off by the heads of dead animals everywhere. Take a look at the website and see if it bothers you or not.

Twenty seven year old male here who ran into the same dilemma. Before my first visit to BKK I was concerned about staying on the river, as it was a bit further out from the nightlife. It was never a problem. He will have no problem getting back to Arun Residence. Eugenia looks great and it has a pool, which is key. For a young guy, Dream is a very cool happening hotel, lots of young people stay there and it is supposed to have a fun bar. Great location for night life as well. I personally enjoy staying on the river; it allows you to escape the madness for a bit. BTW, I travelled with my mother to BKK for the first time last summer, it was a wonderful experience neither of us will ever forget. Have a great trip!
