Thai beach in September

My husband and I will be traveling to Thailand in September. Does anyone have any recommendations for a beach during this time of year. I understand this is the rainy season, so we should stay away from the beaches on the west coast. We are looking for a beach that has some tourist infrastructure, but is not overrun (ie - Phuket), and that makes the most of the non-ideal season we are traveling in. Please include hotel recommendations if you have any!
Thanks.

The only overrun place on Phuket is Patong. Others are more or less ok. But as you mentioned already, September is the wettest month over there.
Hua Hin, Koh Samui and everything between should be better.
September is together with April to June the quietest month regarding tourists. So even the Chaweng beach on Koh Samui wouldnt be overcrowded.
I stayed at the Centara Beach Resort and liked it.
Recommendations for Hua Hin Sofitel, Hyatt and maybe Marriott or the new Sheraton (somewhat outside of town).

I too went to Phuket in September, of 06, for just a few days. One day was rainy, but the rest was nice. On the rainy day, we just hired a van to drive us around the island a bit, and also to the mall for some shopping.
