I'm am just starting a travel blog. Actually, it's a work assignment and work in progress. Starting with my Borneo travels. It's not fully complete but might answer some questions about Kuching and KK. Mind you, it's my "humble" opinion. So check out:

Also, I stayed at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge. I was very pleased with the accomodations , food, boat trips and guides.

Deb- Please write more! Your blog is hilarious and if I ever get to NYC, I want to see your son's knife.
Unfortunately, we have to go back and forth through KK several times so that we can leave our dive gear there and not drag an extra 100 lbs around with us on the land trips. So I will try to find something to do while there.
We are also tribal art junkies as anyone visiting our home will attest. So your description of Kuching shopping resonates with us! I will check out your shops and see what they've got on offer. I am on the fence as to the longhouse visit. I would like to do it, but also want to fit in Bako NP and Mulu, so need to figure out which I would like the most. As to Sepilok v. Semenggoh, I really did not want to do either or both, if I could see them in the wild at BRL and Sukau, but it seems like every package to Sukau Lodge includes Sepilok, so was Semenggoh good enough to consider going there too?

Thanks for your response. Blogging new territory to me, so feedback helps. And yes, I will post knife picture on the blog. I've had to crank this out pretty fast so I've been going back and making so updates.
Now about your other questions...I would have liked to have done Bako as well, but like may of us, there's only so much time and we have to make choices. Here was my thinking...Sarawak is known for tribes Sepilok is known for wildlife. So why would I look for wildlife in Sarawak when I was going to be in Sepilok. Focus on tribes. It's unique to the region.
Next...Orangutans. I was in Sepilok, Semenggoh and I saw them in the wild.
Basically, there's no guarantee that you'll see an Orangutan in the wild. If you do that's great.
And usually, they're pretty far away. So since I couldn't imagine being in Borneo without seeing an Orangutan, I made sure to stop at these places. You only need a 1/2 day for Semenggoh. Then you can go shopping on the main bazarre after
Sepilok felt very touristy, but was part of the "package" with SItours.

One more thing...Mulu caves . I felt really bad I wasn't going to make it there until I experienced the Gomantong Caves. Both these caves are covered in coachroaches and bird crap. The smell is vile! You walk on slippery slimy bird dropping. And if you loose your balance, you'll grab a handful of coachroaches that cover every inch of the walk railing. BTW...our guide told us Mulu doesn't even have walkways. You just walk in piles of...well, you know. So, if you're into caves, bird-crap and coachroaches, you'll love it. Honestly, it wasn't my thing.
