taxis without seatbelts in bangkok
Am I overly anxious? On my second trip to Bangkok last week, I still have yet to find a taxi with seatbelts. On one trip in a red and blue meter taxi I banged my head and twisted my neck on the drivers headrest when he braked suddenly. The airport freeway trip is often fast and furious. I seem to always get a nascar driver wannabe. Is anyone else bothered by using seatbeltless taxis..wherever you travel?

I always take a Mercedes from the airport to the hotel in Bangkok, and they always have seatbelts. Last trip, I was traving with a friend who is adamant about wearing seatbelts, and to my surprise I found that all of the yellow and green taxis we used had seatbelts. I don't know that this is a rule, but it was our experience.

It probably comes down to the age of the Taxi, most Toyotas/Nissans produced now have seat belts fitted as standrad, many of the older smaller Corollas don't have them, but I am pretty certain if you get into a newer Camry or similar car they will have. Agree though arriving on a long flight I would be the extra few bucks and take the mercedes Limo, such a small amount extra but worth every cent. The Law is that drivers must wear,....but....

I'd agree with James that it really depends on the age and condition of the car. In general, I always found seatbelts in the yellow and green taxi, and got reminders from the driver to wear mine whenever I sat in the front. After taking at least fifty cabs last month, I only remember seeing one driver not wearing one.
