Taxi vs. Driver

NEED INFO ASAP! Is it more economical to rent a car in Bali or hire a drive? What other transportation are there?

You do not want to drive yourself in Bali so renting a car is not a good option. You can hire a driver for short trips or for the day. Taxis are available at the airport and in Kuta. I have not gone this route but there is tons of advise and info on costs on www.balitravelforum.com. If you want to hire a driver for short or long trips, you can do this in advance or when you get to Bali. Drivers often hang out near the major hotels looking for passengers. There are also many in downtown Ubud - you will hear them shouting "transport, transport". Figure on about US$30 to hire a driver for the day. We arranged in advance with Putu Arnawa who can be reached at [email protected]. Putu is slightly more expensive than others. There are many other driver recommendations on the Bali Travel Forum. I hope this helps. I see your other 2 posts on low priced lodging received no replies. You might have better luck on the BTF.

on craig's suggestion we also hired putu....he is fantastic...

the reasons not to drive yourself are the following: the roads are mostly very narrow...there are lots of motorcycles and bicycles which often jut out in front of you from every direction...there are lots of scenic roads that you would never find on your own...you would waste time getting from one place to another...if you had an accident you are in trouble!!!

if you decide on putu and he is booked, he will undoubtably suggest someone else for you....if you do have him you will be very pleased....he drives a nice toyota SUV with great a/c...his english is exceptional and he has a great sense of humor and he is intelligent and modern while maintaining his traditions....

I had to make a post here so the 3 of us Putu lovers would be posting in a row. Get Putu! If you are lucky enough to get him, he will make your trip fantastic.

I agree with others. Don't even think about renting a car in Bali. Driving there is scary! I don't know Putu, but a car and driver is very inexpensive, and could be easily arranged.
