tansferring from an international to a domestic flight in Bangkok

My friend is flying Cathay from the US to Bangkok and connecting to a thai flight to Chiang Mai. I'm flying thai from the U.S> and I know I can check my bags all the way through to CM and avoid customs etc in Bangkok. She's been told she has to get her luggage, go through customs in Bangkok and then go to the domestic terminal to check in. Does anyone know if this is true or is there another option?

Thanks

We flew PAL to Bankok and then transferred to Thai for Chiang Mai. In Bangkok we had to get our luggage, go through customs then went to the domestic terminal to check in for our Thai flight. It was quite easy going from the International side to the domestic side even with our luggage.

its a long walk from one to the other but doable if you have plenty of time...

i think it depends on the agreements each airline has with the other....why doesn't she hire a porter??

It is probable that you will also get your bags and go through customs in Bangkok even though they are checked through to Chiang Mai. Sometimes there will be areas for transit passengers such as yourself, where you get your bags, go through customs, and then give the bags back to the airline, all inside the security area.

If you do have to go through immigration in Bangkok, be sure you leave plenty of time between flights. We waited in line for 1 hr 15 minutes last week - - it was a nightmare.
