has anyone stayed at tandjung sari in sanur on the island of bali?

how was it?? any negetives??

did you visit the family cottage?

I remember Tandjung Sari as a lovely place, from my 1st trip to Bali 20 years ago. But we know places don't age well in the tropics....reviews on tripadvisor are good.

As you probably know it was the original " boutique hotel " in Bali . Mick Jagger , David Bowie , Queen Margrethe and on and on during the 70's and 80's. Sanur , once THE place to stay has fallen out of favour but it had a nice beach protected by a reef .There were a lot of cafes on the sand but I read that the local Govt. is moving them out as many were illegally built .
The hotel has a small pool and is very low key .As it was a family owned hotel and a Balinese one at that it is likely to still be charming . Food used to be good . They used to teach dance to children in the afternoon in a pavillion near the beach front .The rooms were nice with outdoor baths / showers and I recall visiting one of the suites and it was good but not stunning .This was years ago and it was beyond my budget then . So I agree that more current reviews will be your best guide .If you are wanting to go to any of the smart / popular restaurants or shop then Seminyak / Legian is the place to be for convenieice .It is about 30 minutes drive from Sanur . The Hyatt at Sanur used to be really lovely with wonderful gardens and all low rise buildings. J

How small is the pool?

The fear is that it will not accomodate a GIANT Panda.

Sanur was one of the first areas to be developed for tourism, even before Nusa Dua. Back in the 80’s we used to stay at a far-more-modest version of the Santrian. As JohnFitz says the Tandjung was at the time the most exclusive place on the beach.

Fast forward 25 years and many of the old-time properties in Sanur are still operating, but they are captive to their intrinsic real estate constraints. The old style architecture – heavy use of wood, lots of stone carving, dark-ish rooms, recessed pools, well-trodden gardens – makes them in my opinion less appealing than the new style ambience of light airy open design.

Because all the good property in Sanur has long since been “taken” the new developments are forced to built on less desirable plots, either on the cliffs (like the Ritz) or on crummy beaches (the Conrad) or in remote areas of Bali (Amankila).

Sanur offers a lot in the way of a nice beach and a friendly community, but it’s definitely a tradeoff between style and substance. It’s a personal decision.

I don't know how long you are going to be there but consider 3 nights at at Tangjung Sarui ,2 nights at Ubud and finish with 3 nigts at The Legian all suite .

Pandas do not sleep. i figure we can stay up all night discussing our experiences in Bali.

OK Bob. If you would rather talk about Cambridge, we are visiting Boston next week and would welcome a local's insight into the real Boston! Places to go, places to eat etc. I appreciate this is not the US board but your local guidance would be much appereciated>
