Tamarind Village in Chiang Mai
 

Has anyone stayed at the Tamarind Village in Chiang Mai, Thailand? If so, please share your expereince. Good, not good, indifferent. What are its attributes? What did you not like?

I stayed there in dec and really liked it. For $42 a night found it excellent VFM too. Charming, low rise (only ground and first floors) construction, lots of natural material used everywhere, good breakfast buffet spread by pool side, helpful staff, central location. Ask for a room on the upper floor facing the quadrangle so you will get a glimpse of green when you open your curtains. The rooms are a fair size for 2 people as are the bathrooms.

We stayed at the Tamarind Village in April and really enjoyed our stay there.

The hotel is in the 'old town'so if you want to be near the night market and river - you should probably not stay there.

As for the accomodation - I definitely agree that you should try and get a room on the upper floor as these have an outward facing window. We had a room on the ground floor and felt a little 'boxed' in as none of the windows faced an open space. The rooms are nicely decorated, the buffet breakfast extensive and the pool is lovely. I would definitely recommend it.

How did you get a rate of $42/nt? I was planning on staying at Tamarind Village in Nov for our honeymoon but have not been quoted a rate anywhere near $42.

It's currently the nicest place to stay in town unless you want to stay in a big western high rise like the Westin, and the only one with character and charm. I've had some people not like it because they didn't have TV's or phones in the room at the time. They are opening up a sister property in the same area called Rachamankha Hotel, which is similar in style but a bit more luxurious. Not sure if it's open quite yet.

$42 is a fantastic rate. Their Web price in $105. I dropped in there yesterday with a friend who was offered a price considerably higher that the web price.

Incidentally, the Westin mentioned by one poster has been re-branded as the Sheraton.

I booked through a site called www.precisionreservations.com. I generally prefer to book directly with hotels but in this case the hotel told me they were sold out for the dates I wanted AND they were more expensive than the site. I just checked the site - from now until Oct 30 the rate on the site is US$34 per night. All the best!
