taking a "weapon" thru china

Silly question, but you never know. I want to take my Leatherman Mini-Tool™ while traveling through Hong Kong and the country side. Has anybody had bad experiences with foreign airport security concerning "concealed" keychain multi-tools?
I rather not have it confiscated.

A few years ago, a friend of mine was travelling through Mainland China. He went through airport security with a small jack knife in his pocket - it was confiscated. My friend (a local Chinese) figues that the security guards kept the knife for themselves. Anyway, if you can, play it save and put the Mini-Tool in your checked luggage.

Ed

Before 9/11 United took a swiss army penknife off me before a flight from the UK to the US. They said they would give it back when I got to the states but when I arrived they had lost it. They gave me a $50 flight voucher and so I have never flown United since as I thought that this was truly lamentable customer service.

My advise is to bury it as deep as you can in your checked luggage. I would also advise you to keep it in its holster if it has one.

I returned from a trip through China and Tibet a few months ago. I made it back with both my regular Leatherman and the mini tool that I keep in my camera bag (take the mini tool out and put it in checked luggage for plane trips).

I had a traditional Chinese knife I bought in Xian confiscated at the airport in Lhasa on the trip BACK across Tibet. I carried it through several airports and ALL the way across Tibet and back. They decided to take it as I was Leaving.

All I can say for sure is Chinese security is unpredictable at best and seams to follow no set rules. GOOD LUCK !

This really doesn't belong to China, but I did want to tell someone that I had my cigar cutter (no edge showing) confiscated at security.
