Not too late but choices are more limited now. With two kids you'll need to contact hotels directly. Search for 2 people and find ones you like then call.

I wonder if it would be a good idea to go to a Japanese travel agent in the USA, like H.I.S. Travel or JTB USA, to book hotels.

i just cant imagine ALL hotels in central kyoto being booked out..anyway spoke to some travel agents - waiting for their reply on availability.

Got them!! what a relief!!
3 nights at new hankyu and 2 nights at the westin.

now back to booking the others.
