Taipei Help with 16 hour Layover ?
We are flying home from Saigon in October, with a 15 hour layover in Taipei. We get in after 8pm and fly out about 10am.

We've never been to Taipei.

Should we try going into the city for the night... is the Metro pretty quick and simple to figure out?
If so, can anyone recommend a hotel that might have a great view that's easy to get to without spending a lot of money and time?

If it sounds like it may not be worth our time, can you recommend a good hotel that's a very short taxi ride away? (I've read in some reviews that the hotel shuttles at the airport are sometimes not worth the long waits?)

Any sage advice will be taken seriously!!!

We spent a few days in Taipei a couple of years ago and loved it.

It takes 35 mins by train to get into Taipei Main Station which is at the centre of the subway system. We stayed at Taipei M Hotel Main Station. Not great views but being close to Taipei Main Staion made it very easy to get around by subway ( it is simple to figure out).

Arriving at that time I think I would just dump my bags at the hotel and head out to try some of the amazing food on offer.

Two options spewing to mind. Raohe Street market is easy to get to by subway. Incredible streetfood and small restaurants line the street which runs for 1 km (a nice Confucian temple at the end of the street)

Another place we loved was Din Tai Fung in the Taipei 101 building. The most amazing dunmplings ever. You would need to reserve in advance or expect to queue. Any hotel near there would have great views of Taipei 101 but would mean a change on the subway. Not sure what time the viewing platform closes at 101 but that would offer amazing views of the city at night.

Some photos and detail of our all too brief time in the city are on our blog @

FWIW , we found Taipei airport to be one of the most efficient and pleasant airports we have ever visited. It shouldn’t take very long to get through. If you need cash there are plenty of ATMs at the airport and they even have staff to show you how to work them!

Very Helpful, crellston! You are seriously tempting me not to be lazy/just stay at the airport. Our luggage will be checked through, so we will just have overnight bags with us.... 101 sounds like a really interesting option. Will look at your pics/blog tomorrow. (it's almost 2 am here! ) kawh

Another option is to explore the cities most proximate to the airport- Zhongli and Tao-yuan. As you land at 8-ish, it will be dinner time. You probably visit a Night Market to grab some street food and enjoy the street vibe.
