Tailored Suits
 

I will be in Thailand for three weeks and would like to get some tailored suits. Some people say they are low quality others love them. Does anyone have any advice? Know a particular tailor in Bangkok or Krabi? How long does it take to tailor? Any incite will be helpful.

You can get good quality or you can get poor quality. It's up to you. If you fall for the "suits, shirts and tie for $99 ready tonight," I expect you can figure out what you'll get. The important factors are to figure in are an absolute minimum of three fittings, know exactly what you want (photos or drawings, know the details you want) chose excellent quality fabrics, and opt for one of the recommended tailors, not a place that employs touts to bring you in off the streets. Also, you'll be far better off using a tailor in Bangkok than in any beach area.

fittings, fittings, fittings....that is the key...and of course decent fabric....

i like jack at monet il sarto in the mini mall at the marriott resort and spa on the upper level...

many like the cousins on sukhumvit and soi 4 sukhumvit....they will tell you about them...

Rajawongse Clothier is one of the aforementioned cousins on Sukhumvit near Soi 4. About $300 per suit - very high quality materials and good selection. Allow time for at least 3 fittings. Three weeks is plenty for this.

Would like to have custom shirts made in Bangkok. Does this also require fittings, fittings, fittings? Is there any tailor especially recommended for shirts?

Any of the recommended tailors will make shirts for you. You will need fittings, of course, but not as many as for a suit.

One or two fittings for a shirt. Rajawongse does good quality dress shirts but I prefer shirts that have a looser fit than theirs.

for shirts one or two fittings is sufficient....jack has made all my shirts for about 8 years....they are fantastic....

So how long to have shirts made from start to finish? Two, three, days? We will be in BKK for 5 days, but hadn't planned to spend all that time at the tailor. What schedule will it take to have shirts made? Will they deliver them to the airport hotel when we return to fly home or will they require one more fitting? Trying to figure how much time to allow. Thanks.

Personally I stick to suits. sport jackets and slacks in BK. I and a few others have not been 100% satisfied with workmanship on shirts. For $60-$75 you can purchase some very nice dress shits in US at Lord & Taylors,Brooks Brothers. etc.ack does his best work in my opinion on jackets using Canali 140 superfine lightweight wools. You can do the 3 fittings in 7-8 days without any pressure. Since you have the time why not a 4th fitting if 3rd fitting needed a few very minor adjustments. Then have Jack ship the package home the day after you are due to leave Asia and it will arrive 7-9 days latter. If you spend $1000USD he will split the shipping cost so it may cost you $75 and you don't have to carry around.I have done it on 3 visits. He has not been good on reorders in sending swayches for some reason.
