is it possible to get tickets for sumo wrestling in july? what is the cost? are these good seats/ where do you purchase/ thanks

July 8 - 22 in Nagoya at the Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium. Seats range in price and quality from cheap to expensive, far away in chairs to nearby in a tatami "box." Advance tickets can be bought online here http://event.chunichi.co.jp/sumo/e/top_e.html or you can wait until day of and buy what's available. Depends on how much you like sumo and how sure you are that you will go.

Opt for the closer seats if you can... they weren't that much more expensive and you get a much better view. I've heard you can get your hotel to arrange for tickets, btw, if that seems easier.

Sumo is EXCELLENT... my friend and I are now totally addicted.

I went to Tokyo in May and it was great fun to see Sumo wrestling live :d I have posted more info in my trip report http://gardkarlsen.com/japan_tokyo.htm . We paid 5000¥ per person when we went to the wrestling a couple of years back.

Am confused about something on the diagram of the arena on the link that KimJapan gave.

The wrestlers are separated into two groups, east and west (or is it north/south?), and they enter from the corners on one side of the arena. The best side to sit on is where the two groups would be walking toward you, from the two corners on the far side.

I forget the Japanese name of the best side, but it must be the "front" on the diagram. The wresters would then be entering from the east and west sides of the "opposite" side.

But the way the diagram is drawn it looks like the front and opposite are in the "endzones". OTOH, the front and opposite have the higher priced C boxes that the e/w don't have along with the B seats and nonreserved.

Might be that the drawing is not to the same scale in x and y.
