Suitcase or backpack?
I'm traveling through India for 2 weeks, during which time I will use a combo of air, train and driver. Do you recommend a suitcase or backpack? My main concern would be on the trains. I keep reading how you have to lock up your bag. Is there a certain area to lock it up or will I be expected to tie it to the bottom of my bunk, which may be on the third level, in which case I'm thinking a backpack would be easier.

The only bag I ever take is my Swiss Army carry one that converts to a backpack.
I like the convenience of wheels with the option of strapping it on my back to get up stairs and over cobble stones or rocky roads. It fits perfectly in an overhead and it carries all I need for any legth of trip as long as I carry some detergent for washing things out along the way. Cheers! |
There's some useful information in this thread: http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessa...p;tid=34773153

The straps to which you lock your pack or case are under the bottom bunk only - there isn't room between the bunks in three-tier for packs (or really two-tier either). I travel with a convertible backpack (straps zip out of sight) but it does't have wheels - I don't want the extra weight. A small Travelpro type case would also work. Bear in mind the floor can be grimy or dusty - don't stash your pack with the side that goes against your back against the floor....
