Suan Lum Night Bazaar, Bangkok

THIS topic comes up a lot, but does anyone know the current situation regarding the night bazaar? I was over on assignment in March and it was still going strong and, since I have to go back to Bangkok in November, and am staying pretty much across the road, I thought it would be nice to go back. It seems to have been scheduled for closure for the past four years but battles on.

maybe hanuman or michael will bring us up to date....last report was it was about 40% open still

Going strong back in April and I suspect still going! Ferris wheel is gone though..

We were there 2 weeks ago and it looked the same as it did when we were there in 2004.

Hanuman Sep 23rd, 2009 08:01 PM

It is still open and I would estimate that currently it is about 50 - 60% of what it was especially circa 2004.

Still there - the company that has rights to develop the land has delayed their plans, which gives the owners (the Crown Property Bureau) more time to get the current tenants to move out. Agree that it's a mere shadow of it's former self, but then I never was much of a fan of the place.

I expect it will keep going until next year, at least.

Thanks all. I'd imagine the global recession means it's a bad time to build, another, vast shopping mall. I can look forward to a cold one in the beer garden now.

MichaelBKK Sep 24th, 2009 06:53 PM

Actually, it was a big shopping mall with offices and condos on top; which, yes, we need a lot more of in Bangkok.

In November, you'll probably be spoiled for choice for beer gardens. They crop up all over town in the cool season.

the suan lum night bazaar was/is one of the few 'different' things to do at night in bangkok. its a real shame they are doing away with this important tourist attraction. Those who were not a big fan of the place...sure its smaller than JJ and less selection, but JJ is so hot and crowded. Suan Lum was a bit cooler, the beer garden was fun and had the best selection of beer in the city, and the occasional fair on the grounds was nice for families. we should petition to save it!

Hanuman Sep 25th, 2009 01:24 AM

The lease is up and the company that leased the land is staying on illegally. People are being evicted day by day and there has been threats of violence from the squatters.

If they or an entrepreneur want to set up another night bazaar they can but they just have to find a property they can rent the land from. Not hard but the current people have no credibility left so perhaps you're interested George?

Hanuman Sep 25th, 2009 01:32 AM

And who are you going to petition? Crown Property owns the land and they are not getting paid any rent and all that rent money is being pocketed by shadowy individuals instead. So when you patronized the place keep in mind that you are supporting such people.

Ooh, controversy. Excellent. But, still, good beer.

MichaelBKK Sep 25th, 2009 06:50 PM

The "plan" was to get a lot of the vendors to move to the Sunday Market near Chatuchak, but I think that place has yet to get off the ground.

Mango7 Sep 26th, 2009 10:31 AM

Hi Hanuman- The armed Thai government can't forcefully evict squatters from its own land? Sounds like there's something else going on...maybe a few payoffs here and there? ;]

Hanuman Sep 26th, 2009 10:56 AM

If the property was my or yours then the squatters would be “dealt with” a long time ago. We have our methods eh?

However, the owners of the company that owns the property does have very high principles and probably insist on following the laws to the letter.

This market is still going strong. We visited on Feb 21st this year.

A fantastic experience.
