Downtown area... Safari into desert area

The attraction in Jaisalmer is the town itself and especially the fort area of it. As rhkkmk mentions, a camel ride & overnight in the desert, if that's what's called a "safari". It's a tourist thing they've devised, my friend seemed to enjoy it but I passed as I just like walking around the town.

I've spent time in both Jaisalmer & Jodhpur twice and I'd happily return to Jodhpur. Not, I don't think, Jaisalmer.

If you don't want to spend a night in the desert (I didn't) you might still enjoy a camel or jeep ride out there.

But the main attraction is the town iself, especially the fort. I really enjoyed it, but I stayed in the fort itself, with a room overlooking the ramparts, and I think these days (that was 2001) the recommendation is to not stay in the fort for ecological reasons.

Our Jaisalmer "sunset in the desert" experience was not at all what we expected. The desert was like a shopping mall on a weekend. Besides all of the people, many entrepreneurs inhabit the desert at sunset: singing gypsies, dancing children, tube-tooting locals, and of course the snack vendors

Sorry to hear that, marija. Of course, my experience was right after 9-11 in 2001, so there weren't many tourists around. I wound up sitting round a camp fire with a bunch of Gujeratis singing folk songs, with no-one else in sight, and a sky full of stars.
