Sri Lankan Wildlife in June
Switched plans from May to June. Has anyone been to Yala National Park? What animals did you see there? How about Sinharaja? What did you see there? Any other suggestions for a month trip? What is the best laidback beach town? How about a good reasonable Colombo hotel once we land to get our feet planted firmly for a day or so on the front part of the trip, and the last day or two before we fly out?

Yala should have a diverse array of wildlife - it is known for elephants, leopards and many other animals - it is the dry season in June so it is a good time to visit as the animals are competing for water and thus will be more visible. Sinharaja is a rainforest known for smaller animals and leeches, not big game. Believe it or not, the Holiday Inn rates highly for Columbo - we intend to avoid Colombo, however. If your budget permits, why not stay in a villa - Hideaway or Horathapola Estate seem like good although pricey options relatively close to the airport.

I've stayed at the Galadari Hotel,in Colombo.Great ocean view rooms.A 4 star.A sumptuous & wonderful breakfast spread.A lounge bar.Rooftop restaurant.The Margarita Bar.

A laidback beach town would be Hikkaduwa, south of Colombo, maybe a 3hrs drive. The Coral Sands Hotel is a good place to stay. This is the site:

Another hideaway is Unawatuna. An excellent place to enjoy the tropical beauty in relative recluse.
The Secret Garden Villa is a boutique hotel.Run by a Swiss national,it has a colonial touch to it.

For the santuaries in Srilanka contact the Eco Adventure Tours:
Phone : +94 11 5373305 - 07
Fax : +94 11 5373304
They have packages for YALA & UDAWALAWE NATIONAL PARK.There is abundant flora & fauna.
Wilpattu, Yala, Wasgamuwa, Minneriya and Kawdulla safari parks are among the most popular safari parks in Sri Lanka while Bundala, Sinharaja rainforest and Kumana feature bird sanctuaries. Inside the boundaries of these safari parks dwell a large variety of animals including Elephants, Sri Lankan sloth bears, deer and monkeys such as the endemic macaque, purple-faced leaf monkey and shaggy beard monkey. Some of the more common species seen around Sri Lanka and living in groups at these safari parks include wild boar, jackals, mongoose, porcupines, giant squirrels, rats, shrews and wild buffalo.
Be prepared for long journeys. The roads in Srilanka (countryside) are narrow & traffic move bothways.
