Special occasion restaurant in Bangkok
We will be in Bangkok on my daughter's 10th birthday. We have promised her that we'll go to a nice special place to celebrate as a family. My son is 14. We would like a place that is fancy and where children would have fun. Does not have to be a particularly family-oriented restaurant. I have been thinking about one of the restaurants at Mandarin Oriental but don't know which one. Any other recommendations?
How else can we surprise her? Is there a nice show or something like that where we could take her?
Also, she likes to collect ethnic dolls from every country that she has visited. What is the best place to find one?
Thanks in advance.

Siam Niramit is "The Show". Unfortunately, the buffet dinner is severely lacking. You could have dinner eslewhere, then head over for the show.

Tawandang Rama III might be fun. It has an eclectic mix of entertainment, from traditional Thai music and dance, to Thai pop and western covers.
The food is both Thai and European, and pretty good stuff. And, they brew their own beer.
The Rama III location is a bit more Westerner oriented and easy to get to.

For dolls, I would send you to Bangkok Dolls: http://g.co/maps/5z223

Tawandang is not recommended for children and is more of an adult beer bar(micro brewery) kind of place.
Re the Oriental: I don't know your travel date but if you will be here in the next month or two then Ciao will be nice for an el fresco Italian dining by the river. If you want fancy then Le Normandie at the Oriental but they do not allow children to dine there. Lord Jim can be fun for Sunday brunch and the dinner there is nice. Sala Rim Nam has traditional or classical Thai dances which might entertain your kids while dining or they could get bored if they don't like classical dances.

I would agree... no children at Tawandang. It is a very fun place, indeed! But for ADULTS. And that doesn't mean there is anything involving nudity or profanity on stage. It just isn't the kind of place I would take children. You really do not see kids here.

Forgot about the barge at the Oriental. You can have a dinner cruise on their barge, small teak barge, and enjoy the night view of Bangkok from the river. Could be fun and you can book the whole barge and have prearranged entertainment for your kids.

As the evening wears on, Tawangdang does focus more towards adults. And, as the even wears on, said adults seem to focus on themselves. But, before lets say 9PM, it is hardly an adult venue. The couple of times I have visited, we visited with family and saw many other families.
As far as dinner cruises go, you might also look into Loy Nava. Loy Nava even offers hotel pick up, no need to get yourself to the venue, it will come to get you.

either the indian or the thai restaurant at Face on soi 38, sukhumvit... look up under face bar...
either the roof top restaurant at the sky bar on silom or the roof top at banyon tree...
biscotti in the four seasons hotel is always good for all ages...
not sure there would be any good "show" for that age...

Walking into our restaurant, housed in a century old building is like going back in time. Welcome to Thailand and share with ...

Hi Gina,
You may find this article useful. Not much about restaraunts, but heaps of great ideas of things to do with the kids.

Even though it is not fancy, consider taking the kids to The Loft Food Court at Central Chidlom Shopping Centre. Get them their own prepaid card and set them loose. My kids LOVE it there and the seats by the window are really pleasant. At night, there is often live music too.
It is much more upscale and a bit more expensive than a standard food court, but still fabulous value for high standard food.

I agree that the Food Loft at Central Chidlom department store is a treat. I love sitting by the windows. But I'm not sure this qualifies as a 'special occasion' place in Bangkok?? If the OP is in the neighborhood at lunch time, the Food Loft would certainly be suitable. The food is excellent, and there are lots of choices. I love the way they do that payment card when you enter the food court.

My kids think it is very "special", but it is probably not what you are looking for. Keep it on the list for another night.
Mind you, I think that most 10 year olds would prefer to have a birthday dinner there than one of the restaraunts at the Oriental.

Thanks to all of you for the great suggestions. We ended up going to Sala Rim Nam and it was very nice. My daughter got her picture taken with several of the dancers in fancy costumes. She felt very special. We went to the Food Loft, too, and the kids loved roaming around with their cards so much. We liked Siam Niramit, too, w/o dinner. Thanks for the link. I recommend it myself, especially if you have children.
A mistake that we made was to assume that we could go to Biscotti or another nice place on 12/30, our last evening in BKK, without advance reservation. We thought that people would prefer to have that special night out on 12/31 and 12/30 would be an easy day to find a place. Alas, every place we tried in the morning was fully booked already. We ended up dining in Siam Paragon, which was ok, but not exactly how we'd like to conlcude the trip. I will never make that mistake again.
