special occasion

ONE OF OUR MOST LOYAL AND KNOWLEDGEABLE MEMBERS IS TURNIG 60 TOMORROW....WHO COULD IT BE??

SHE LIVES IN CHICAGO.....SHE LOVES THE ORIENTAL...IN FACT SOME CALL HER MS ORIENTAL!!

SHE GIVES GREAT ADVICE ON FODORS, AND PROBABLY ELSEWHERE...

MAY I BE THE FIRST TO WISH HER THE MOST HAPPY OF BIRTHDAYS..

who is it you ask....?? all regular fodorites will know....she may be shy so i don't think we should use her name...she might not want anyone to know that she is 60...well almost 60....and she certainly would not want it broadcast across the world...

just think the day she was born her good friend, the King of Thailand, came to the throne and they are celebrating her birthday with a procession on the chao payra river in her honor tomorrow....heads of state and kings and queens are already in bangkok for the celebration..

LONG LIVE ------

Happy birthday!!! You know on your birthday you should do something totally out of character- like booking your self into the Peninsula!!!!!

glorialf Jun 12th, 2006 06:01 AM

Thank you!!!!!!!

Bill -- I am doing something totally out of character-- I'm dealing with a kitchen sink that is backing up! At the Oriental it would have been fixed in 5 minutes -- here is is, not surprisingly, not a lot of fun. Ah well, I guess that's what happens when you turn 60 --- things start to break down and back up. :-)

Martinan Jun 12th, 2006 07:37 AM

Gloria, so it's YOU! A Very Happy 60th Birthday! You gave me such good advice on our trip to Thailand last year. Thanks for all that you do here at Fodors. Many more happy travels in the future!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Bob neglected to mention her frequent custom at the Cotton House and her generous lending of her name.

I do note a peculiarity in the announcement:

SHE GIVES GREAT ADVICE ON FODORS, AND PROBABLY ELSEWHERE...

Are we to infer that Bob questions whether any advice not given on Fodors by the Birthday Person has any value? The use of "Probably" clearly demonstrates a lack of firm belief in any non-Fodors advice. A sad image comes to mind.

kuranosuke Jun 12th, 2006 09:27 AM

at first, i thought "wow!, carol looks so young for 60" lol, just joking. :-)

btw, i don't think the sink at the o would dare back up. hb gloria, many more!

Guenmai Jun 12th, 2006 09:33 AM

Happy Birthday! Happy Travels!

rhkkmk Jun 12th, 2006 09:44 AM

have to say it....there have been past reports of brown water coming from the O's sinks from time to time...haha

BillT Jun 12th, 2006 10:09 AM

Bob thats theraputic mud water- when that happens you are supposed to fill up the tub and take the mud bath! Sadly the Penn does not offer this feature.

May I also add my warmest birthday wishes to you!! Hope you will enjoy one heck of a celebration all year long!! Many thanks for all you do for fellow Fodorites...you in fact clinched it for our family with your China House recommendation in Bangkok "for our big splash" last December...it was a most memorable occasion on our trip!

Happy birthday and happy many more traveling days ahead!

Terry

Craig Jun 12th, 2006 11:29 AM

James - not to take away from Gloria's celebration but the answer to your question can be found at:

Ummm... how can I say this... I AM 60!! My big 6-0 birthday was in November of '05. Thanks for the compliment though.... yes, I do look youngish...?! I think it's working with 6-year olds all those years. Haha (not to mention a DH whose antics have curled my hair...literally)

Gloria... hope your day is turning out better as it wears on. Plumbing problems are not fun. Have a very happy birthday.

Carol

Happy Birthday, Gloria!

robmac Jun 13th, 2006 09:11 AM

Many Happy Returns & a big thank you for your advice before our trip last year.

glorialf Jun 13th, 2006 11:07 AM

Thanks for all your birthday wishes. Pumbing problem did get resolved which improved my day significantly. So did the gorgeous flowers I got from my "friends at the Oriental" which is another reason why I doubt I will be switching to the Pen anytime soon. :-)

Kathie Jun 13th, 2006 11:32 AM

How wonderful, Gloria! The Oriental really knows how to treat a guest.

rhkkmk Jun 13th, 2006 07:39 PM

kathie...she is not a guest, she is a resident!!

glorialf Jun 14th, 2006 03:44 AM

Bob-- Unfortunately, I'm NOT a resident -- I wish I were!!!!! I'm a not nearly frequent enough guest. Definitely not frequent enough this year. :-(

BillT Jun 14th, 2006 04:37 AM

Ok lets have a little fun now that we are talking about birthdays, ages, etc.
At what age does a young girl/woman stop wishing she was older? At what age does a woman start wishing she was younger and then again at what age does a woman start bragging about her age
