Sofitel Plaza Saigon experience?
Has anyone stayed in the Sofitel Plaza Saigon?
Thanks for any insights or comments. |
I stayed there about 5 years ago. It was a nice hotel, but the location is so-so. It's out near the zoo and history museum, which makes it a very long walk from all the other sights and restaurants. Still, it can be a pleasant walk, and these days there are lots of taxis in HCMC (there weren't when I stayed there).

Michael:
Thanks very much for this. We are on a trip that combines hotels that we booked based on our own research with some hotels that were chosen for us (in the cities where my husband is working). The Sofitel in HCMC was chosen for us. Nobody writes about staying at the Saigon Sofitel so I suspected a set of drawbacks. Ah well...If taxis are as reasonably priced in HCMC as Hanoi -- once one learns to avoid the scammers with the meters that move at warp speed -- then I guess we'll manage just fine. Before HCMC, we are off to Furama/Danang and La Residence in Hue. They both get so much positive press that I am very excited to experience them for a few nights each. Thanks again. |
If it's on the company's tab, why not ask for the Park Hyatt or the Sheraton. ;-)

The location isn't bad. It's a 5-10 minute to the Notre Dame Cathedral and Post Office. Another 10 minutes and you're at the Opera House on Dong Khoi and Le Loi. That's the center of D1. There is a very good salon (called The Salon) up/over 1 block on Mac Dinh Chi and Nguyen Thi Minh Kai (in the Sommerset). The grounds of the zoo area are nice, but I wouldn't recommend the zoo. It's also been said the Sofitel has the best Sunday Brunch in town, but I haven't tried it. The taxis available at the Sofitel have meter fall at 18,000VND instead of the 12 or 15,000 of all the other taxis in town and the rate is much higher per KM. Not a lot more $$ and they are the nicest taxis in town (Toyota Camry).
