Hi Smeagol, Did you like The Fortress? Was it easy to venture out for dinner? Did you keep you car and driver with you?

No car and driver, we released for this, he picked us up 3 days later. It's about 25 minutes tuk tuk to a Galle, there is a tuk tuk station opposite the hotel and we fixed a rate and the driver was happy to wait whilst we walked around Galle etc.....
The hotel buffet each night is fabulous and if you want to laze all day this hotel is great. We didn't venture out from here at night, it's not like staying in a Galle.
We liked the Fortress BUT it depends on what you want if this hotel is for you.

Cynnerella -we stayed in Galle and we loved it. DH had thrown a bit of a strop when he saw that we were booked into another hotel in the middle of nowhere so we got our driver to take us into Galle and we found a hotel ourselves - the Fort Printer was where we ended up and we liked it a lot. The food was very good too but there are quite a few good places to eat in Galle. Also you get the opportunity to see a real Sri Lankan town that you can walk round - even at night. we let our driver go too and used tuk tuks to get about which allowed us to interact more with locals.

it's also got some excellent shops and a terrific maritime museum which has great a/c!

Finally, walking round the walls [everyone does it] and swimming off the little beach [not everyone doing it but lots of people and it's great for people-watching] are definite musts.

I'm sure the Fortress is great but staying in Galle was one of the highlights of our trip .

oh yes, you may be able to watch a cricket match as well - there is an international cricket ground just outside the walls.

If you want a beach stay, the Fotress is one to consider but should we go back I would choose a stay in Galle as we missed that ( or both would be perfect in my book).

Thank you so much Smeagol and Annhig. We decided on the Fortress for the sea view and fingers crossed, whale & turtles watching.

Smeagol, Thanks for the tip on the tuk tuk station. Through 1 of your posts, I got in touch with [email protected] and she's arranging our car and driver for our trip.

Fabulous, Doris was always very responsive and the driver we had from BSL was great. There is a turtle farm a very short drive from the Fotress, our driver took us there on our way to Colombo. It's for rehabilitating turtles, if I'm honest I wasn't sure......
Right next to the hotel are the stilted fisherman, although they must have been on holiday as we didn't see them. Hopefully you will.
If there on a Saturday night go to the seafood BBQ in the hotel, it was fabulous ( and very very busy with non residents)

Thanks Smeagol. I spoke to Doris a couple of times and agree she's very responsive. She tried to help us with train tickets from Kandy to Hatton but sadly observation carriage, first and second class are already booked. We won't be staying at The Fortress over a Saturday so will also miss the seafood BBQ.

We didnt go in the observation carriage... just regular first class.... still worth the journey (IMHO)
The food on the nights at the Fortress really was great and a great selection at breakfast-- beware of the Jewelery shop at the hotel, it has some GORGEOUS things in there
At check in i did find the "tour of the hotel" a bit tiresome (trying to sell the spa - which did look good) but overall staff were friendly.
