We are spending six nights at a resort. In Hoi An.. We are agenda 65 to72 but quite fit and frequent travellers . A please advice what we should do during this time. We are not beach people and live pretty close to beaches in Austraalia. Many thanks, Ulinda.

6 nights seems like 3 too many. Perhaps a few days in Hue could be another option?

I agree with bisbee, spend some time in Hue. 6 days in Hoi an and you will have seen everything 3 times over. There are some nice cycle rides out into the country and some Cham ruins at My Son

Agree - 6 nights is way too many esp if you are not beach people. The ruins at My Son are interesting and will take about 1/2 day. There are cooking classes and I believe there is a Hoi An food tour that I have read some people have taken. Hoi An is a charming town and we thoroughly enjoyed our three nights there, but I feel that was plenty of time. I would take 2 nights or even 3 and go visit Hue.

I concur with the above posters. Split your time between hue and hoi an. The food tour that yestravel mentioned sounded fabulous and I wished that we had known about it. Someone recently wrote about it in their trip report.

Thanks for all the replies. It's a prepaid package so the dates are fixed. Shall relax and and take it easy. . Probably spend time at the nice resort.

South of Da Nang (and about 20 minutes north of Hoi An are the "Marble Mountains" where there's an interesting hike up to temples and huge caves that served as VC headquarters during the war. Apparently the mountain was right in line with the Da Nang runway if the VC wanted to take shots at arriving or departing military flights. There are stonemasons at the southern entrance to the steps (this is an all-climbing visit, but it's all paved or at least smooth) and nice views from the higher elevations. Worth a few hours - the caves are remarkable.
There's also a sculpture museum in Da Nang that's worth an hour or so.
While in Hoi An, you should strongly consider getting a fitting for a suit or dress the first day, you can go back usually the next day for alterations and pick it up or have it delivered to your hotel by late the second day or early the third day at the latest. We used Yali, they have two locations right on the main drag, and got quality suits and silk dresses for about $100USD (depends on the fabric and whether you get a vest or shirt).
There's a little embroidery workshop/salesroom on the way into town that I wouldn't particularly recommend, it seems to be exclusively for tourists.
I enjoyed the guild halls (often referred to as "temples") along the main street as well, watching the locals bringing in offerings and just interacting was fun, and each of the temples has an entirely different look and feel.
If you enjoy luxury, the Nam Hai resort on the coast road is probably the most high end resort I've ever stayed at (private compound, private pool, three buildings just for us, personal iPods and free video library, dinner service in your own great room by the pool whenever you'd like, and personal all-day attendent who lives in your compound). There's great landscaping and lovely private spa and massage rooms, great food (at a price) and wonderful hospitality. It's about a five minute taxi ride east of Hoi An, and definitely not "local culture" but more like a Vietnamese version of a Ritz-Carlton, if Hoi An feels too rustic for you. Probably the most expensive spa services for a hundred miles, but a memorable experience that doesn't cost any more than it would in the US.

Hi, we are also spending 6 nights in Hoi An but will be on the beach as although I am near beaches in Sydney it is just so beautiful on the beach in Hoi An. Was there last year in May and did motorbike tours with HAMA but if that is not your way you can do taxi or jeep tours to Vinh Moc tunnels, Marble Mts, My Son, herb gardens...lots to do. There is the Neville's Foodie tour or a cooking class - try Green Bamboo..wonderful time had by all last year. Get some clothes made, take a dinner trip up ther river or just sit in a restaurant or bar and watch the lanterns and town come to life. Take a trip along the coast via China Beach, An Bang beach and Cua Dai beach - just because you can. I don't think you will regret having 6 nights!!

Which resort, if I can ask? My friend and I just spent 3 nights at the Life Heritage resort, on the edge of the old town.

Life Heritage is a great choice it's a riverside resort. And you can walk about 100m to get the beach.

I stayed at the Golden Sands on Cua Dai beach. Great pool and even enjoyed a dinner for 2 on the beach with some fantastic food.
