Singapore Vs. Kuala Lumpur

Dear Asia Travelers,

Next month we are going to have our weddings and I am finalizing our honeymoon and I need some help. We have never been to Asia so this might be a good chance to do so. However, I do not have lot of info on the region, I mean do not know anyone who has been to these countries. I have researched a lot and we cannot make up our minds on where to go. I planned to stay a week in Bali and if we fly that much we would want to see a gig city as well. Which one would you pick? Any pros and cons? Please send me some suggestion as all I have is what I read in the books and on the net.
Thanks in advance

Tamas, it depends on where in Asia you will be flying to from your home. If I had to choose one big city to visit I for the first-time Asia traveler, I would choose Bangkok or Hong Kong, although Singapore is easier for the foreign traveler in some ways than many other Asian cities. If you are flying to Bali you may be going through there; Asia is very very vast......enjoy your honeymoon and don't spend even more time on a plane within Asia. You could easily spend two weeks in Bali. Forget KL for the first time traveler unless you are flying MAS and going through there. Buy a guidebook!

I agree that the most interesting city would be Bangkok, but it sounds like it must be either KL or SIngapore for you. I'd choose Singapore. I often use it as a gateway when I'm headed to Indonesia. It is the most modern, clean, safe city you'll ever see. Some people think that means boring, but there are lots of interesting things to do. KL is certainly less expensive than Singapore, but I just don't like it as well.

Yes, surely Singapore rather than KL!

thanks Guys. I appreciate your tips. I will buy a guidebook as always I needed some opinion on people that have actually been there.
Hong Kong would be my first choice, but it is quite far away from Bali.
I do not know why, but Singapore is closes to my heart than KL.
Maybe as you said it is clean, safe, organized.
Thanks.

Hi orgy7,
Vienna and I have just received 2 guidebooks on the cities, but from this distance it is very difficult to decide as I do not often have a chance to travel that far...

I would definitely pick Singapore over Kuala Lumpur. I couldn't imagine honeymooning in Kl. I would check into the Ritz Carlton, in Singapore, and get a room with a MARINA VIEW. Nothing much gets better than that. Happy Travels!

Not sure where you are flying from but we had our stop over in Hong Kong when flying to Bali.

I haven't been to KL - yet so will have to say Singapore. Although Bangkok and Hong Kong have much more atmosphere in my opinion.

We went to Singapore and Vietnam on our honeymoon last year and had a fantastic time which I am sure you will have as well.

I am going to stick up for Kuala Lumpur here - it is actually my favourite city in Asia - I have been there many times, along with Bangkok, Singapore & Hong Kong.

In my opinion it is beautiful, people are very friendly, world class hotels at VERY reasonable prices, great food and CHEAP shopping !!!

I also love Singapore but it is VERY business orientated - people just want your money, whilst in KL people are more genuine.

As for not spending a honeymoon in KL as mentioned in an earlier reply - well I had my first ever Far Eastern experience in KL back in 1990 - on my honeymoon and have never looked back since !!! Believe me - 3/4 days in KL at the start of a honeymoon in a 5 star hotel being pampered with great food, service, spa treatments, outdoor pool, fantastic gourmet restaurants at low prices, and a trip up to the top of the KL Tower for a romantic meal in the revolving restaurant - not a bad start to married life !!
