I am looking for restaurant recommendations for Singapore - any favorite places that shouldn't be missed?

We will be there for 5 days/6 nights before leaving for Bali, plus 1 additional night for an overnight stopover on our way home.

We like all types of food with a special fondness for Indian and dim sum I haven't had much Malay cuisine, so I am looking forward to that. And of course, we are looking forward to the hawker stalls.

As for budget - we'd like to stay on the inexpensive side, no more than say S$50 per person per day.

There is a long thread here on the topic of Singapore restaurants with lots of good recommendations. Do a search for it. (search box at the top of this page) There is a long discussion of hawker food as well. There are so many good choices! Singapore is a place where they are serious about good food.

Hi november -

Just responded to your thread on Singapore hotels.

We too, love Indian food. We recently had a nice Indian meal in the basement of the Park Royal on Kitchener Road Hotel (which I recommended in your other thread). The restaurant is called Jewel of India - we don't usually care for buffets, but this one was really quite good and inexpensive at S$12 each.

Incidentially, Park Royal on Kitchener Road is located smack dab in the middle of Little India, so all you need do is walk out the front door of the hotel to find Indian food.

Around the corner from the other hotel I suggested (Bayview) is a Kopitiam food hall - they have just about every kind of food you can imagine - we had two good inexpensive Indian meals there.

We've also eaten several times at Mumtaz Mahal in the Near East Plaza on Scotts Road, across the street from Royal Plaza on Scotts Hotel. It's good too, more expensive than the other places I've mentioned, but still well within your budget.

There's a Song of India down the road a bit from the Royal Plaza on Scotts - I haven't tried it yet, but it's been recommended here on Fodor's.

Man, if you like food, is Singapore the right place for you. A post to look for here is "One Night in Singapore, Need Great Restaurant" there are good reccos there. Someone recently topped it for you, so it should be easy to find.

But for sure also ask your friends, as they will know the latest and greatest and non-touristy and what to avoid. New restaurants are always opening (and closing) there.

True Blue, 117 East Coast Rd., over in Katong. It's a Paranakan restaurant...do lunch there...make a reservation...and then walk the street...interesting. This is the Paranakan area. The owner has probably opened his new Paranakan shop...the largest in the region...that's supposed to be, I think, near or in the Asian Civilizations Museum. He e-mailed me about it last year as he's my kebaya maker. He has many trades. And who knows...he might open an eatery there,too.
Also Indochine Restaurant on Club Street is a must...for lunch...and one block over from it...on the main street...name has slipped my mind... is the beautiful Hindu Temple. Club Street is a one-block street in that area. There is also an Indochine Restaurant next to the Asian Civilizations Museum, but is open for dinner.
I've heard that Jaan Restaurant is also good. It's inside of the Fullerton Hotel where I've stayed, but forgot to eat at the restaurant. The Fullerton is a few steps across the bridge from the Asian Civilizations Museum. If you're over there, go inside the Fullerton. It's a beautiful place. You can very easily get there on the MRT...subway. Happy Travels!

Thanks so much for the recommendations. A friend asked why we were planning to spend so long in Singapore "because all there is to do there really is eat". I asked what was wrong with that Our plan it basically to eat with some sightseeing thrown in for variety.

Be sure to try some "chicken rice", an inexpensive dish which you can find just about everywhere in Singapore. It's delicious!

Thank you very much for your very comprehensive Singapore Hawker Center post and your food blog. What is your recommendation for a good hawker center for BBQ seafood?(preferably not too far from the center) You had mentioned Newton is mostly for tourists and, yes, I go there. I also tried Chomp Chomp but it seems that many stalls are closed. What are the alternatives?

My favourite hawker center is the one at old airport road. It is not near the MRT so most likely you'll have to take a cab.

The main reasons being there's a wide variety of food stalls which are highly recommended.

For the BBQ seafood I like the Mattar Road Seafood. I like their BBQ sting ray and sotong (squid). They have an excellent home made chilli. Note they are closed Tuesday and Wednesday so they have time to prepare the chilli.

A must try is the Toa Payoh rojak. They're closed on Sundays. Be prepared to wait in the evenings. It could take up to an hour and they sell out pretty quickly.

Wash all the great food down with ice cold sugar cane juice or you can try the soursop juice for something different. Forget about coke.

And one more: fish head curry? I assume that this dish is something that is best eaten in a hawker center or similar? Thanks.

I'm not an authority on chilli crab or Thai food since I don't eat much of both. Mainly it's because my kids don't enjoy spicy food or crab. My wife is allergic to crab.

As mentioned in an earlier post Mattar Road Seafood has pretty good chilli crab. There's Melben at Ang Mo Kio which is pretty decent. They are normally very crowded. Been a while since my last visit though.

For Thai, I have good memories of Than Ying which serves the refine royal style of Thai food (also read expensive) Their dessert buffet is very nice.

Nowadays curry fish head are served everywhere ranging from the humble stall at hawker centres...

For me, I still enjoy them at my the humble stir fry near my home.
For those who don't enjoy spicy food, there's steamboat fish head which is really good.
