One more word on the subject of eating in Singapore.
I am an Australian cartoonist, and I had trouble mastering chopsticks in the Singapore food courts. You may like to see my impressions of this experience at

As for budget bargains, when I was there last year, the Singapore Tourist Authority was giving out free vouchers for a free chilli crab meal - I obtained this voucher at Changi airport info counter on arrival, and later enjoyed a tasty complimentary meal of crab at a restaurant on Merchant Quay. Don't know whether the offer is still current.

Just stumbled on this thread. We are planning a December trip to Asia, with a 3-4 day stay in Singapore. Thanks for all the restaurant tips!

If I may do a little sidetracking here, it's about shopping. I like to get food-related items to take home and to give as gifts: spices, pretty condiment dishes, pottery that can be used as serving dishes, condiments, etc. Any suggestions on stores, markets, etc.? Thank you, and please keep those restaurant tips coming!

Vegas, you'll find that kind of thing everywhere. You can go to Mustafa's. an Indian food emporium in Little India, open 24 hours a day. Most of the big department stores have food/grocery sections, and I've often purchased spices and condiments there. Wander around... you'll find things where you least expect them!

Vegas-the Black Pepper Crab at Eng Seng is a wonderful experience. It is at the corner of Ju Chiat Place and Still Rd.. You need to get there between 5:30 and 5:45 p.m.. They only sell one tank of crabs a day and any later will risk getting shut out.

I got some greaet food-type souvenirs at Mustafas!

OK Tengo, I REALLY liked the chili crab at Long Beach at Dempsey:

The best part was mopping it up with the deep fried bread. OMG. I did not care as much for the pepper crab; I felt like it masked the flavor of the crab. But the chili crab...winnah!!!

P.s. My trip report starts here:

Will make sure to include a stop at Mustafa's for the goodies-for-the-foodies, and will try both the black pepper and chili crab dishes. Those sound so yummy!

Thank you.

My wife and I were just in Sinapore 2 weeks ago (stayed at the St. Regis, which we enjoyed for the service and location).

We had Indian food at Yantra and thought it was excellent. Located on Tanglin Road (behind Tudor Court) between the SR and Regent.

Do try the curry fish head, turtle soup, frog leg porridge (tastes like chicken! trust me on this!)

From now till the 15th day of Chinese New Year (early February), there would be the traditional dish orginated here called Yusheng (literal translation live fish) available at Chinese restaurants/eating places. Available only during this period.
