Singapore Overnight for Female

I have a day and a half "layover" in Singapore in September. My travel buddies are on a different flight so that leaves me in Singapore by myself.

Where is an economical place to stay that is safe for a female traveling alone? I want to be in the best place to experience Singapore, I have heard that the Chinatown area is good?

I will also do some sightseeing, what are the top places to see in such a short timeframe?

Thanks!!

Everywhere in Singapore is safe for a single woman. It is probably the safest city in the world. If you are looking for an inexpensive place, consider the YMCA which is across from the Dhoby Ghat MRT station. One of the regulars on teh borad often stays there.

Do read some of the many posts about things to do in Singapore. You'll find a long list of posts that can be very helpful.

YMCA International House Hotel at 1 Orchard Road. I've stayed there for 10 years and love the place. Happy Travels!

Singapore- SOOOO safe!!! I loved chinatown and Arab street. I stayed with friends so I do not know prices except to say get a Singapore Sling at Raffles Long Bar. I think the hotel is probably too expensive for most of us!! Enjoy your layover!!

I just gotta ask: How much for the Singapore Sling at Raffles?

Guen,
How is No 1 Orchard now? 5 years ago we stayed at the Family Suite on the fourth floor. The kids were still small so it worked out OK. We were on a 2 week Singapore vacation & needed to stretch our budget. WE loved the convenience & the central location. I lived in Sing about 20 years ago & wanted to show the kids around.

The hotel was under renovations & there were beams & painters hanging on them everywhere. Coming into Singapore on a UA Biz seat using our FF miles, Anika then 10yo asked her Dad as we were checking in." Dad, you did not use your points for this hotel, did you?"

The Y hotel is looking really nice. I've watched it transform from...not an ugly duckling...but a plain duckling to a swan...over the last 10 years. One really nice thing that they completed, about 3-4 years ago, was the new dining room. They took out the gym, I think it was, and added the dining room and there are big windows the whole width of the room with lots of sunlight. Then all new furniture was bought and in bright, cheerful colors. A BIG difference from the small dining area they once had.
They also took the computer/internet room from the very small space downstairs and put it in its own private room, next to the new diningroom area.
And the lobby has been totally renovated and a slit-level space added where young people can go for info on jobs, etc. They also teach many different languages there, including Thai. It's a really active place to try to help people in the community.
And they closed the attached McDonalds and bought that space for more expansion.
I plan, at some point, to make a donation to that Y. They do really great work.
I first stayed there back when the louver windows in the bathrooms to the private rooms remained permanently open and birds used to fly into the room through the louvers. Plus, it used to throw off the air conditioning since the bathroom wasn't air conditioned...due to open windows...but the room was.
That Y is on PRIME land and investors would love to get their hands on it. But they keep hanging in there. Happy Travels!

Thanks for the update. Glad they worked on the dining room as the place AND the food reminded me of school cafeteria. After day 3 during our 2 week stay, we were having brekkie at the now closed down Mickey D & everywhere else at Rasa Singapura Mall ( if I remember right). Might have to look into their family room again with their multiple beds. With our need for 2 rooms now, I have to be more creative with our accomodation options.

I'll never forget my girlfriend sneaking in Durian for us to share & then forgetting about it. I was left to eat 2 packs of B54 or whatever that good stuff was in the dark balcony ALONE since none of my family would stay with me. I was thinking, is this what it feels like to do illegal substances- hurried? alone? in the dark?

Needless to say, it was the least favorite of my durian enjoying days.
