I'm making my first trip to Singapore in mid/late January, and was hoping for some simple advice from the folks here who no doubt know the score!!<BR>It's obviously going to range from moderately hot to hot during the day,,,,,,but are shorts appropriate wear when dining out, etc? I plan to take a couple of pairs of very light slacks, but just wasn't sure what the attitude would be towards "nice" shorts for men.<BR>Thanks in advance for any help you can provide and Best wishes.

I'd say shorts are fine for casual lunches. I'd rather wear light slacks for the evenings, depending on where you are going. <BR>Besides, be aware, that A/C in some places (hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, etc.) can be real cold. At least, this is what I found it to be.

Thanks much for the replies, that's sort of what I was guessing, but I'll feel much better knowing that there aren't "norms" that make it impolite to wear shorts, etc.<BR><BR>Best wishes.

If you look like a tourist, anything you wear will be fine. Generally, if you are to hang around the crowded/touristy/shopping areas, shorts are okay. If you intend to visit religious buildings, slacks are definitely better.<BR><BR>Dining? Restaurants for dinner frown on shorts but may still let you in. Coffee shops/hawker centres, foodcourts have plenty of people wearing anything they like.<BR><BR>

This is the general &quot;rule&quot;: Except for hotel lounge cafes,fast food r'rants, r'rants in Chinatown, Little India, Holland Village and Boat Quay it is better to err on the side of trousers when dining in a nice r'rant.

Sg is a pretty sophisticated city and I would'nt wear shorts except to the beach or zoo. It seems to be a dress up not dress down city. Many hotels and the better restaraunts have dress codes. My hotel had dress codes through most of the public areas.

Unless you are dining at the very best restaurants then shorts and a nice top is fine. <BR>There used to be a much more formal attitude to clothes in Singapore some years ago but it has become more relaxed in that sense of late. <BR>Don't however chew gum or throw anything anywhere. <BR>On my last trip through Singapore - 2 weeks ago - I ate at Newton's Circus which had the most devine Asian food I have had in a long time - probably since I was last in Singapore/Malaysia actually. The Satay Club still exists but it is now at Clark Quay and not as good as it once was I think. <BR>Health regulations are very good in Singapore so it is safe to eat anywhere. It was hot though so do be sensible and take the clothes that you are most comfortable in and are the coolest. I always tell myself that I will wear what I like because in all probability no one will ever see me again anyway.<BR>Having said all that though, there is no reason to eat at ritsy restaurants as hawker food is wonderful and very relaxed informal.
