We had the same question this New Year just gone.
Singapore was great fun, one of the most civilised places on the planet. The new gardens down by Marina Bay are spectalar as is the Marina Bay hotel. The food is diverse and of a high quality never had a bad meal there. We were on the way to Perth, WA and wanted a side trip for a week. We hadn't been to Thailand and so took a very cheap Air Asia flight to Phuket and chartered a yacht for a week around Phang Nga bay. or there Krabi is spectacular, we joined the coast from KPP at Koh Lanta and sailed up to Koh Chong Lat. never seen anything like the seascapes in the area around the top of Koh Yao Noi. We looked at Langkawi as an alternative but it looked a little tame. It may be worth looking at the islands just over the border from Langkawi, in Thailand. Koh Lipe looked great and has natural parks closeby for day trips. For us the boats were hugely expensive in Langkawi so we opted for Phuket. |
Thanks Prachuap and Dickie_G,
We loved staying on Ko Lanta when we visited Bangkok several years ago…and loved our boat tip to visit Ko Phi Phi and the gorgeous area. I can just imagine how wonderful this would be on a boat. On our upcoming cruise stop at Phuket, I hope to get out on a boat to see the beautiful Phang Nga bay area, if only for a day. I do think I"m leaning to "just" experiencing Singapore before the cruise. I love good food….not so much into the high end shopping…so I think we can find enough atmospheric parts of Singapore to enjoy…and, I like the "night safari" idea, even though we just got back from two safari camps in the Okavango Delta. |
BarefootBeach- This cruise sounds amazing! Would you mind sharing the name of the company you're using? Thanks!!

Its amazing how the bias of respondents come out here. Singapore is different from your other itinerary as it IS a major world capital and an urban/business center. Having said that, I find it the most interesting and civilized city on earth, easy to get around and with the best food in the world. The three zoos are spectacular, the billion dollar Gardens by the Bay (a truly spectacular achievement), both the Asian Civilization and National museums, the Botanical Gardens and the many walkable neighborhoods (like Chinatown and Little India) make it wonderful place to relax and recharge. You can also take a short boat ride to a neighboring islands (Kusu and/or Palau Ubin) and spend the afternoon walking the shrines or kampungs of another era. You'll appreciate the differences from Singapore and the other places you'll visit.

Best food in world? Based on what?

HI singabob,
I have read great things about the food choices in Singapore…and I'm looking forward to a city that's clean, everything works, is safe, and has interesting cultural neighborhoods and shops to start our trip. Thank you for listing all the great things to do there. |
