SIM card
Hi, my son will be travelling through Asia and Australia for about 2 months, backpacking, staying in hostels and and couch surfing. He will be visiting Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Korea before heading to Australia. Does anyone know of a reasonabaly priced sim card for phone and data that he can buy from the US before leaving that will work in most or all of these places? Is he better off buying SIM cards in each country? Wil they be available at all the airports easily?
The reason I am posting this question is that I want to make sure I can stay in touch with him:) Any other tips?? Thanks! |
I used to buy from telestial.com. But for my next trip I signed up for a T Mobile month-to-month plan with international coverage. And there's always Skype.

T Mobile offers free unlimited data in 200 countries. That's hard to beat. You also get 20 cent a minute calls, but texting is free.

@Kathie - but there are some odd exclusions - Laos in Asia for example. And Ukraine is included, but none of the Balkan countries are! I don't think they've caught up with events in Europe....

Thanks, Kathie, I assume that is if you have T Mobile as your telephone carrier here? Or is that on the month to month plan as well? He has Verizon unfortunately! He has one one month and a few days left on his contract and would like to get a new phone before he leaves but they won't give him an early upgrade.

We switched from Verizon to T Mobile specifically because of the international free data. I will admit that I don't "love" T Mobile, reception isn't as good as Verizon, but I've decided it is good enough.
Thursdays, I only check the countries we were planning on traveling to in the next year or so - all were included. I expect the included countries will change over time. |
