Silk robe in BKK ready-made

My DH is off to BKK again and I want him to buy me a soft silk robe while there. Can anyone recommend a store for me to send him to? Thanks!

Most thai silk is not soft. But Jim Thompson's is. I would start there if you want great quality silk.

My DH brought me back some scarves from JT and they were quite expensive-was hoping for someplace more reasonable to send him to shop for me. Thanks!

I used to get nice soft silk robes at the night bazaar in Chiang Mai, but they seem to have gone out of fashion.

In Bangkok, I'd give Naraiphand a try, especially the basement.

I would ask the staff at your hotel.Back when I used to stay at hotels, I would buy a bathrobe from each hotel I stayed at as a souvenir. However, they usually aren't silk, although I've bought some that felt better than silk like at the Metropolitan Hotel. Happy Travels!

my wife prefers the wonderful cotton ones that the lux hotels sell in their shops: peninsula, shangri-la and others...lite weight and cool....

send one with him as a sample of your size, and he can have one custom made in a day or two....cotton house or js thai silk in river city shopping center or any tailor shop near to where he is staying...

Thanks all and my DH reminded me that it may be difficult to find my size in BKK since most ready made clothes are pretty small. I'm a size 6 here but the jackets he brought back for me must've been size 2's and that was the largest he could find.

True... sizing can be a big problem. The hotel bathrobes seem to be sized differently though. I've seldom had problems with them. And definitely the most luxurious and expensive bathrobe that I bought was the one at the Metropolitan. They were so popular until just to get one I had to buy an extra large, which is big. They were usually sold out so quickly. I bought my mom a bathrobe from the Chateau de Bangkok serviced apartment building at Ploenchit skytrain station and that's definitely her favorite robe. The cotton is very nice, it's not bulky, and the tie is sewn onto the bathrobe so that it doesn't fall off. I like that one, too. Happy Travels!

Size 6 is not that hard to find in Thailand!

Unfortunately, he's not staying at the best hotels while there on business otherwise I would have him buy me a soft, light cotton one at a hotel.

easy to go to one of the better hotels for a purchase

Thanks, I'll tell him to stop by the Shangri-la or one of the other central city hotels to get a lightweight one for me-any other hotels you rec. for a lightweight robe? Do most of the lux hotels carry similar ones?

Kathie Aug 22nd, 2007 10:19 AM

In my experience all of the lux hotels carry robes rather different from each other. And often one hotel may have several designs. Give him an idea of what you want and have him stop by hotels until he sees something you'll like.

I'll be lucky if he gets to check out one hotel's robes and it'll be whichever one he ends up being closest to-I need to get over there! Thanks all.

A friend and I just returned from our 3rd trip to Bangkok. On previous trips, we bought long (mid-calf length) silk robes at Pat Pong Mkt.

This trip, we were after short (above the knee) silk robes. We were short on time and since we had bought robes before at Pat Pong, we returned there.

Sure enough, we found them . . . both long/short at the same stall. We asked how much for the short ones . . . 1,500 baht each ($45.45).

We started the bargaining . . . long story short, we ended up buying 6 for 1,500 ($7.58 ea.)! The lady had all colors and two sizes . . . small and large.

I'm a size 8 and the small was nice, plenty roomy, would probably fit up to a 12. My friend is larger (22W) and the large fit her OK.

Send your husband to Pat Pong, tell him to look straight ahead, and not pay more than 250 bahts. We each bought 6 and wished we'd bought more . . . great gifts.

Hope this helps,

sandy ---are they really silk??

sandy_b Aug 23rd, 2007 05:44 AM

They look like silk, feel like silk, they are silk to us. They appear to be the same quality as the long ones we bought (and still wear) back in '98.
