Siem Reap or Chiang Rai
Thanks to all of you for your great advice in putting together our Thailand trip. Kathie's tip on checking "Thai Air" and "Bangkok Air" discovery passes was very helpful. We're starting out with four nights in BKK and ending with four nights in Phuket. Now we have to decide between the Golden Triangle or Angkor Wat for our three nights in the middle. The Angkor Wat itinerary I've worked out is only slightly more expensive than Chiang Rai, assuming similar hotels. Another consideration I have is our return flight to BKK from Phuket to make our connecting flight home. On the Chiang Rai itinerary we'd be flying Thai Air from Phuket to BKK. On the Siem Reap itinerary, we'd be using Air Asia for the final leg to BKK.
Can someone help push me off the fence?

Siem Riep, definitely. Angkor Wat is one of the great sights in the world. The temples are astounding. Chiang Rai is pleasant, but not anywhere close to AW. This is not close.
If you go to SR, the Discovery Pass will work well for you.

I loved my time in the Golden Triangle. But the opportunity to see Angkor - one of the wonders of the world - is in a different league entirely.
Take a look at our Angkor Photos - www.marlandc.com If you find them stunning and have that "I have to go now" feeling, then choose Angkor. If you think "would I really like to spend 4 days looking at all those old stones?" then go to the Golden Triangle.

Another vote for Angkor Wat.
Siem Reap is changing so rapidly it's best to see it now. I was there first in 2002 and then again in Dec 2007. The difference in the town and the crowds around the temples is astounding.
