Siem Reap Guides

My question is how do you pay for your guide? Fom this site I know how much to pay a day but do you pay each day as it occurs or just at the end of your stay? How much, if any, do you tip?

That leads me to wondering do you tip at restaurants and/or the hotel?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

From my experience you pay in cash at the end of the time, not each day. Our guide also organised the car so we paid her the lot. We're aussies so we didn't tip - might not be the right thing but thats how we work it! However we did take some small gifts which we gave to the guide and driver as they had been really nice. I dare say they would have prefered more money but they seemed very pleased.

We didn't hire a guide, just a driver. And we settled up at the end of the trip, when he drove us to the airport. We did tip, though you don't have to.

i paid at the end and i gave both the driver and guide a good tip...if the driver did extra for us like hanging around at nite to take us to restaurants i gave him and extra amount that nite....$5+....

what does tipping have to do with being australian???? its an excuse...

Yes Bob it is an excuse but in general Australians just don't tip - we in fact seldom think about it. I do tip but only if I have exceptional service above and beyond what I have paid for. I would tip a driver given the extra service that you received.

We arranged a guide and driver via our hotel in Siem Reap. When we asked about paying, the hotel indicated that we could either pay cash to the two men at the end or charge it to our bill and they would take care of it. We decided to pay cash -- assumed that was better for the guide and driver than dealing with the hotel. We definitely tipped and they were grateful -- if you get good service, reward it (people work hard to make a living and the little extra means more to them than it does in your own pocket).
