Side trip from HK?
I will be in HK Saturday 11/9 through Friday 11/26. Some frineds have sugegsted that I consider a day or overnight trip to somewhere else in SE Asia. Is it possible to arrange such a thing on the spur ofthe moment from HK? Any suggestions?
Thanks |
I assume u are here on work hence can only use weekends? One obvious weekend trip out of HK is Macau - no prior preparation required. Take the hydro foil from here - loads of good hotels - POusada Sao Tiago, Mandarin Orinetal, etc. Other destinations which are near are China (Beijing - 3 hr flight, Xian, Shanghai) and Vietnam. Hanoi is only a 1 hour flight. Good fares are also available eg United recently started flying to Ho Chi Minh City and has good promo fares on. What may be difficult at short notice is visas so think about what you would like to do during your short break - sightsee wonders (Beijing), enjoy a modern city (Shanghai), be a beach bum (Nha Trang, Vietnam), soak in colonial charm (Hanoi), etc then revert and perhaps you can organize your visa on that basis.

Thanks, hobbes. Actually this is all leisure time so I am free to move at will. Already figured a day trip to Macau, am considering perhaps an overnight trip, perhaps leave Monday return Tuesday. Would Beijing or Bangkok work?

cathy pacific is offering some great inter asia fares at the moment...look at their site...
hanoi is very cheap how about ankkor wat (siem reap cambodia) |
Beijing is doable for an overnight trip at a hectic pace and with some sights missed eg may be tough to fit the summer palace in. Bangkok is IMO a bit far for just 1 night. Also 2 days is very little in Bkk.

Well connex have changed since I was last in HK, but they can only have got easier. If you can get yourself to Guangzhou then there are overnight buses to Yangshou - not exactly off the beaten path but still worth visiting for the amazing landscape. Or there may even be flights to Xian for all I know. Hey, do a little research!!
Macau is always worth it - but try and go for more than one night. |
